  • Settings > Cellular > Scroll down to the Cellular Data section
Here, you’ll find out how much data your apps have used during the “current period.” FYI: The current period is not your billing cycle; it’s referring to your last reset. You can scroll down to the bottom to see the beginning date of your last reset. You should tap on “Reset Statistics” on the billing plan start date to keep tabs on your data usage.

Screenshot of DataMan app. Swipe right-to-left to set Monthly start date and data cap. Swipe bottom-to-top to show usage history.

Alternatively, a 3rd-party app like ‘s DataMan app can automatically inform you when you hit up to 4 preset percentages of your monthly data plan.

To configure DataMan: install app, launch, swipe screen right-to-left, Select Data Plan, enter monthly start date and data cap*. Done. There is no need to leave the DataMan app running.

*Tip: The monthly start date varies with each Data Plan. If your Data usage is paid for by ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´, your Data Plan starts on the 2nd of each month.

Potential sources of Excessive Data Usage

Email, texting, and even web-browsing use low to moderate amounts of your Data Cap. Here are a few larger consumers of data:

  • Streaming movies. Watching a streaming move (e.g. NetFlix, YouTube, Vimeo) can easily consume over an 1GB/hour — ensure you are on WiFi first!
  • Video conferencing — Skype Video Conferencing uses more data than Skype Audio. Use Skype Audio unless you are on WiFi.
  • Audio Streaming inadvertently left on. Apps like TuneIn let you stream Audio from the Internet and continue streaming in the background while you read your mail or browse the Internet. Ensure you turn them off when you are done. We had one instance where someone inadvertently streamed audio in the background for a month, exceeding their 6GB data cap!
  • Online multi-player games — ensure you are on WiFi, unless you know that the data consumption for that specific game is low.
  • iOS Status Bar WiFi indicatorInadvertently thinking you’re on WiFi when you’re not — always look for the WiFi indicator on the upper-left hand corner of your iOS display. Or just keep cellular data set to OFF until you explicitly choose to use it. (See TipÌý²ú±ð±ô´Ç·É)

Tip: Or Just Disable (cellular) data until you need it!

  • From the Home screen:
    • ¾±±Ê³ó´Ç²Ô±ð:ÌýSettings > Cellular > Cellular Data
    • ¾±±Ê²¹»å:ÌýSettings > Cellular Data
  • Slide the toggle next to Cellular Data to off. This will disable all cellular data traffic until it’s enabled again.

iTeam is 2-years old! Thank you for helping us celebrate! /mobileservices/2013/thank-you-for-helping-celebrate-our-2yr-anniversary/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=thank-you-for-helping-celebrate-our-2yr-anniversary Tue, 28 May 2013 18:09:25 +0000 http://carleton.ca/iteam/?p=13240 The iTeam, a volunteer employee-initiative, which brings together members of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ community who use iPhones & iPads on campus, celebrated 2-yrs of Lunch’n’Learns today. For the anniversary session, the team revealed some of its presentation magic, and showed attendees .

Attendees simultaneously display 6 separate iPads on the Big Screen, any one of which the moderator can re-arrange or zoom.

Over the past 2 years, the iTeam volunteers have given over 2-dozen presentations, attended by over 300 members of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Community. If you or someone you know uses an iPad or iPhone in their work, let them know about .

Minutes: iPad Intermediate – W-drives (Nov 28 2012) /mobileservices/2012/minutes-ipad-intermediate-accessing-w-drives-nov-28-2012/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=minutes-ipad-intermediate-accessing-w-drives-nov-28-2012 Thu, 29 Nov 2012 15:25:15 +0000 http://carleton.ca/iteam/?p=12431 You may already be using a departmental shared drive from your office PC (or Mac). This month come learn how to access that W-Drive from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, as well!

•    SMB (aka W-Drive) client for iPhone and iPad
• VPN setup for ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ (required for off-campus access to W-drives)
• Q&A

Note: If you’re new to the iPad, you may wish to also consider our rotating series of iPad for Beginners sessions—you’re welcome to attend either beginner or intermediate sessions. Or both!

Minutes:

re:  app, $5

• FileBrowser instructions for ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ are available from CCS:

• These instructions assume you are using the CCS-provided W-drive.
– Server name: ccsnas01.cunet.carleton.ca
– Network share path to CCS-provided W-drive\DeptFolders$

• One attendee had their files stored on a different server, so that the fully-qualifed name or IP address of their server had to be substituted in place of ccsnas01…

• Several attendees were storing their files in differently-named network shares:
…we had them log into our PC as themselves, and we noted the path to their W-drive and then changed the path in from “DeptFolders$” to where their PC had indicated they were storing their files.

• One attendee bought FileBrowser ($5) online and was concerned when she didn’t immediately receive her invoice from iTunes. This is normal—iTunes invoices normally follow 1-3 days after purchase.

re: VPN

• Clarification: VPN is not necessary to use FileBrowser on-campus over the CU-Wireless WiFi network; only from off-campus

• ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ VPN instructions are available from CCS:
• A number of attendees received messages that the “shared secret” was incorrect. The actual problem was that they had entered the Group name inaccurately—it’s “ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´IntranetVPN“, case-sensitive, and note “Intranet” not “Internet”.

• One attendee asked if Android comes with a built-in VPN client, as do all iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. The iTeam is focused on iOS, but we’re happy to help our Android-using colleagues when we can. The answer is that the presence of a built-in VPN support varies by Android device and OS version. If you are looking for a 3rd-party VPN client for your Android be sure that it supports the “IPSec” aka “Cisco” flavour of VPN, which is what ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ uses.

Thanks to all who attended—your participation made our year-end session a great one! See you back in January 2013.
