using a <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/mycarletonone\/\">My杏吧原创One<\/a> account.\u00a0\u00a0 All desktop pc&#8217;s owned and managed by the department are now accessed using a <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/mycarletonone\/\">My杏吧原创One<\/a> account. \u00a0 Math department computer accounts are now only used to access a Math department mailbox or the Lovelace Linux server. \u00a0 Graduate lab Linux desktop machines and the ottawa and toronto compute servers require an additional Graduate lab account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here you will find technical information for the style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">These labs contain Dell Wyse Zero Client devices that provide a Windows 10 desktop.\u00a0 This is a green technology as the Zero Client devices consume a fraction of the power that a conventional desktop pc would use.\u00a0\u00a0 All students and instructors must log in using their existing MycarletonOne account.\u00a0 Account passwords can be reset at the <a href=\"http:\/\/myone.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My杏吧原创One webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-course-files\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-course-files\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Course Files<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-course-files\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The easiest and most secure way to provide course content to your students is to place it in the Brightspace section for the course.\u00a0\u00a0 Another option would be to have an I: drive created for the course.\u00a0 There is an icon on the desktop that the students can use to map the I: drive for the course.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-sas-access\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-sas-access\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">SAS Access<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-sas-access\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SAS is available in the Course Software folder in the Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Make sure to save your files to the P: drive.\u00a0 Files saved to the Windows folders (e.g. Desktop, Documents) on the C: drive will be deleted.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"remote\"><\/a>Remote Access<\/h3>\n<h4>Linux Remote Access<\/h4>\n<p>You have access to the Linux based server lovelace.math.carleton.ca using your Math department account.\u00a0 \u00a0Lovelace provides file storage space and optionally a personal website.<\/p>\n<p>You must use SSH to connect to\u00a0 lovelace, as it is a secure method for remote access.\u00a0 Below are some free SSH software utilities that you may be helpful.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-putty-terminal-access\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-putty-terminal-access\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Putty: Terminal Access<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-putty-terminal-access\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Putty<\/a> is a free Windows utility that allows you to open a terminal on a remote unix\/linux machine.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-winscp-file-transfer\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-winscp-file-transfer\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">WinSCP: File Transfer<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-winscp-file-transfer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/winscp.net\/eng\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WinSCP<\/a> is a free Windows utility that allows you to copy files to and from your computer and a remote unix\/linux server.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-connecting-to-server\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-connecting-to-server\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Connecting to server<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-connecting-to-server\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fill out the host, username, and password, then click Login<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-copy-files-to-server\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-copy-files-to-server\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Copy files to server<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-copy-files-to-server\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">After connecting, the left side shows the files on your computer, while the right side show the files on the remove Linux server.\u00a0 You may copy files back and forth by dragging them between the left and right windows.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-changing-unix-file-permissions\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-changing-unix-file-permissions\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Changing UNIX file permissions<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-changing-unix-file-permissions\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignleft\" title=\"winscp_permissions\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/winscp_permissions.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Right-click on the remote file, click Properties.\u00a0 You should have at least <strong>R<\/strong> (Read) and <strong>W<\/strong> (Write) checked for Owner.<\/p>\n<p>If you check <strong>R<\/strong> for group and other, then everybody will be able to read the file.\u00a0 This is useful for personal website files in Turing\u2019s public_html, or for shared course files on Killarney.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-mac-os-x\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-mac-os-x\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Mac OS X<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-mac-os-x\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rsug.itd.umich.edu\/software\/fugu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fugu<\/a> is a free Mac OS X utility that is transfers files to and from a Linux server, using remote SSH.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You may also use <em>ssh<\/em> and <em>scp<\/em> commands on the Mac OS X terminal<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"website\"><\/a>Website Setup<\/h3>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-website-on-brightspace\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-website-on-brightspace\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Website on Brightspace<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-website-on-brightspace\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>For a course website please consider Brightspace, the University supported E-Learning system. It is much easier to use Brightspace than to learn how to write html!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/edc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/edc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-math-personal-website\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-math-personal-website\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Math Personal Website<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-math-personal-website\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>We recommend use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getpublii.com\/\">Publii<\/a> as tool for building and modifying a personal web site.   A personal web site can either be hosted in your Math Linux account or the mypage.science.carleton.ca server.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"printing\"><\/a>Faculty Printing<\/h3>\n<h4>Faculty Workroom\u00a0(HP4390)<\/h4>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-information-on-faculty-workroom\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-information-on-faculty-workroom\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Information on Faculty Workroom<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-information-on-faculty-workroom\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The printer for faculty and instructors is located in the Faculty Workroom, room 4390HP.\u00a0 The number of pages printed by each School member is tracked for accounting purposes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There is an HP Laserjet M507 printer in the Faculty Workroom, room HP4390.<br \/>\nThere are two computers in this room from which you may print to the printer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It is not possible to print to these printers from a laptop.\u00a0 If you have office space with a desktop computer, you may be able to print directly from your office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Technical problems with printing should be directed to Computer Support staff, while questions regarding printer usage and policy should be directed to the School Administrator.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"software\"><\/a>Site Licensed Software<\/h3>\n<h4>Campus-Wide Software<\/h4>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/ccs\/all-services\/computers\/site-licensed-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/its\/all-services\/computers\/site-licensed-software\/<\/a> for more information on products such as Microsoft Office and Maple.<\/p>\n<h4>Math\/Stats Department Software<\/h4>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-sas\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-sas\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">SAS<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-sas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The department has installed SAS in the undergraduate teaching labs for use in tutorial sessions.\u00a0 Contact Computer Support staff if you wish to have a copy installed on your own computer.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-matlab\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-matlab\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Matlab<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-matlab\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Matlab R2015a is installed in the teaching labs for use in tutorial sessions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Matlab R2014a is installed in the graduate lab for use in research.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-r\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-r\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">R<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-r\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>The R programming language (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.r-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.r-project.org\/<\/a>) is installed in the graduate lab.\u00a0 If you require additional R packages please contact your Computer Support staff.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div>\n<h4>Thunderbird\u00a0software<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-information-on-thunderbird-software\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-information-on-thunderbird-software\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Information on Thunderbird Software<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-information-on-thunderbird-software\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We recommend that you use Mozilla Thunderbird to read your email.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The free email software Mozilla Thunderbird is recommended for use on your own computer. This is a full-featured, easy to use email client. It does require some setup, describe\u00a0below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Use this link to <a href=\"https:\/\/download.mozilla.org\/?product=thunderbird-115.2.0-SSL&amp;os=win64&amp;lang=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download Thunderbird<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Once Thunderbird has been downloaded and installed to your computer, perform the following steps to configure it for your Math email\u00a0account:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The first screen asks for your name, email address and password <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/math\/technical-help\/faculty\/email\/thunderbird-first\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3426\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"thunderbird-first\" src=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/math\/wp-content\/uploads\/thunderbird-first.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>click on continue to go to the next screen. Thunderbird tries to be clever at this point and figure out the settings. Once the screen settles down, click on the edit button and change the settings to match what is below. You can try \u201cRe-test Configuration\u201d to test it.
