This is a green technology as the Zero Clients consume a fraction of the power that would be consumed by conventional desktop pc\u2019s.\u00a0 You login using the My杏吧原创One account name and password, which is also used to access other services such as WebCT and the My 杏吧原创 portal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Printing\"><div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-printing\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-printing\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Printing<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-printing\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><br \/>\nA printer which is part of Graphics Services <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cuonthego\/\">CU On the GO<\/a> service is located in HP3371, the small room at the back of the HP3393 lab. You need to use your campus card in the print station to pay for your printing.<br \/>\n<\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div><\/p>\n<p id=\"Course_Files\"><div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-course-files\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-course-files\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Course Files<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-course-files\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>For this lab, instructors will need to provide course material and files using Brightspace.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div><\/p>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-spss-sas-and-matlab-access\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-spss-sas-and-matlab-access\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">SPSS, SAS and Matlab Access<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-spss-sas-and-matlab-access\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>An SPSS and SAS icon appears on the desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to save your files to the P: drive or to a personal USB memory stick.\u00a0 Files saved to the Windows folders (e.g. Desktop, Documents) on the C: drive will be deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Remote access to the SPSS and SAS application is available via <a href=\"https:\/\/cudesktop.carleton.ca\">CUDesktop<\/a> and selecting &#8220;Vmware Horizon HTTP Access&#8221;.\u00a0 After logging in select the General Student image just as you would in the lab.\u00a0 \u00a0Alternatively, you can opt to install the Vmware Horizon Client and invoke that instead.\u00a0 The first time you launch the Vmware Horizon Client you need to tell it to connect to cudesktop.carleton.ca.<\/p>\n<p>Matlab, SAS and SPSS are all site licensed and can be installed on your own computer for free.\u00a0 To install Matlab go to <a href=\"https:\/\/i.carleton.ca\/its-software\/matlab-2023\/\">Matlab<\/a>.\u00a0 To install SPSS go to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/all-services\/computers\/site-licensed-software\/spss\/\">SPSS<\/a>.\u00a0 To install SAS go to <a href=\"https:\/\/i.carleton.ca\/its-software\/sas-9-4\/\">SAS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-password-change\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-password-change\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Password Change<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-password-change\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>Since your existing ITS account and password is used in this lab, the standard 杏吧原创 password reset can be used. This is provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/myone.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My杏吧原创One website<\/a>. Note that it may take some time for the password reset to complete.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Graduate (CFI) Lab (HP 4365)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">The Graduate Lab in Herzberg 4365, is available to graduate students, instructors and visiting faculty. Most lab machines run a recent version of Ubuntu Linux, and a few run Windows.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">Application software available on Ubuntu Linux includes: Emacs editor, Firefox browser, Latex, Kile, R, Rstudio, Maple, Matlab R2012A.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">For Ubuntu, student accounts use the same account name as their ITS student account, but the password is set to the student number. To request creation of an account, contact &#99;o&#109;p&#117;t&#x65;r&#x73;u&#x70;p&#x6f;r&#x74;&#64;&#x6d;a&#x74;h&#x2e;c&#x61;r&#x6c;&#101;&#x74;&#111;&#x6e;&#46;&#x63;&#97;<\/p>\n<p>For Windows, students accounts use the same username and password as the ITS student account.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">You can print to the HP LaserJet M507 printer called gradlab.\u00a0 Print quotas for the academic year (September 1 to August 31) are 500 pages.\u00a0 Any quota remaining at the end of August will be carried over to the next academic year.\u00a0 You will receive an email warning notification on your cmail account when you have 20 pages left available to print.\u00a0 When your quota runs out, you will receive another email message, and your file will not print in this instance.\u00a0 If your quota runs out and you require additional pages, please see the School Administrator in Herzberg room 4302A.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">Two compute servers named ottawa and toronto is available for computationally heavy jobs.\u00a0 Each server runs Scientific Linux and has the equivalent of 12 processor cores.\u00a0\u00a0 Toronto has 224GB of memory and ottawa has 288GB of memory.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">To change your Ubuntu password you need to open a terminal window and run the yppasswd command.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">Graduating students will need to <a href=\"http:\/\/gradstudents.carleton.ca\/thesis-requirements\/pdfa-formatting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">convert their thesis into PDF\/A form<\/a>.\u00a0 One of the Windows machines in the lab has a copy of Foxit PhantomPro which can be used for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\"><strong>Jupyter Notebook on Toronto and Ottawa Servers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The current version of Anaconda3 has been installed on the Toronto and Ottawa servers to enable use of Jupyter notebook by all accounts.\u00a0\u00a0 Both Toronto and Ottawa have Jupyter kernels for Gap 4, Macaulay2 and Magma. Ottawa also has a Jupyter kernel for Sagemath.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to access Sagemath from a Jupyter notebook, you first need to run the command.<\/p>\n<p>conda activate sage<\/p>\n<p>Jupyter notebook needs to be invoked with the command<\/p>\n<p>jupyter notebook \u2013no-browser &amp;<\/p>\n<p>It should then display a url such as the following<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:8889\/?token=29ab61c8af6a69870cc7513d36a9c26dcd5b98dac6c660a3\">http:\/\/127.0.0.1:8889\/?token=29ab61c8af6a69870cc7513d36a9c26dcd5b98dac6c660a3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this example your notebook server is running on the port 8889.\u00a0\u00a0 You need to establish ssh port forwarding to that port before you can paste this url into your browser.\u00a0\u00a0 A good description of doing that can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/ljvmiranda921.github.io\/notebook\/2018\/01\/31\/running-a-jupyter-notebook\/\">https:\/\/ljvmiranda921.github.io\/notebook\/2018\/01\/31\/running-a-jupyter-notebook\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An easier connection method involves configuring Jupyter to listen on the network interface as well as the localhost interface thus eliminating the need to establish port forwarding.<\/p>\n<p>First create a file called \u00a0jupyter_notebook_config.py in your graduate lab account and add the following two lines to it.<\/p>\n<p>c.NotebookApp.allow_origin = &#8216;*&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>c.NotebookApp.ip = &#8216;0.0.0.0&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Now when you invoke jupyter notebook it will display a url that looks like<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.math.carleton.ca:8889\/?token=29ab61c8af6a69870cc7513d36a9c26dcd5b98dac6c660a3\">http:\/\/ottawa.math.carleton.ca:8889\/?token=29ab61c8af6a69870cc7513d36a9c26dcd5b98dac6c660a3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ports used by jupyter are accessible from the Internet so you can connect to your Jupyter notebook from off-campus without having to establish a VPN connection.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The department operates two Teaching Labs in Herzberg 3393 and 4385, and a Graduate Computing Lab in Herzberg 4365.\u00a0 Problems with any of these facilities should be reported to &#x63;&#111;m&#x70;&#x75;&#116;e&#x72;&#115;u&#x70;&#x70;&#111;r&#x74;&#64;m&#x61;&#x74;&#104;&#46;&#x63;&#x61;&#114;&#x6c;&#x65;&#116;o&#x6e;&#x2e;&#99;a.\u00a0 If it is an emergency, go to HP4362 or HP4354.
