Project summary and background

FGSES has been awarded a five-year grant from IDRC as a part of an ambitious program for the creation and support of a network of 12 research chairs across the Global South. The aim is to support the production of evidence-based research on the matter of forced displacement.

FGSES invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in Political Science, Social Sciences, or any relevant discipline for the position of Lead Chair on Forced Displacement.

The roles and responsibilities of the successful candidate include research and teaching. The successful candidate is also expected to actively contribute to the design and implementation of specific teaching and research programs. The research chairs will conduct research on forced displacement using an interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral and gender-transformative approach. They will also mentor and supervise early career scholars.

They will conduct outreach with impacted communities, particularly refugee-led initiatives, support localized agenda-setting, amplify refugee and host community voices, and advocate with policy stakeholders at local and international levels to ensure a strong link between research and policy.

Selection Criteria

  • University professor with strong record in research and community outreach.
  • PhD in Social Sciences: Political science demography, sociology, public policy, development economics or any other discipline relevant to migration and forced displacement studies.
  • Proven record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fluency in Arabic, English and French.
  • Excellent command of written English and French.
  • Strong academic knowledge in the field of migration, forced displacement and refugee law.
  • Field experience with forcibly displaced persons and/or migrants and refugees is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a governmental role or NGOs working with migrants is a plus.
  • Willingness and commitment to work with different stakeholders, including but not limited to civil society organizations/local authorities and representatives of forcibly displaced communities.
  • Commitment to the mentoring and assistance of early career researchers and PhD students working in the field of forced displacement.
  • Commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and gender equality.
  • Women and candidates from minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties and expected deliverables

  • Facilitate the effective operation and management of the chair on forced displacement of the Faculty of Governance, Social and Economic Sciences and provide strong leadership to it.
  • Supervise the activities and projects of the chair and ensure their communication to relevant stakeholders.
  • Submit a workplan to IDRC for approval, including proposed activities in the three areas of focus: research, community outreach, and policy outreach. The chair will lead on these three axes of focus.
  • Coordinate with other IDRC-funded research chairs to strengthen coordination and mutual learning and to engage in possible joint activities, with support from LERRN at ĐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University.
  • Regularly report to relevant responsible at the FGSES on the work and activities of the chair, while ensuring the smooth running of activities and timely reporting of any issues pertaining to the work of the chair.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with all relevant departments of the FGSES in the design, organization and running of events relevant to the work of the chair.
  • Actively contribute to the scientific production of the chair, through the publishing of research papers and policy brief, as agreed upon in the contract.
  • Regularly provide technical progress reports to FGSES and IDRC and engage with both institutions in regional and global fora.
  • Design a process to ensure the long-term sustainability of the position of chair beyond the IDRC funding.

  1. a detailed curriculum vitae,
  2. a separate, full list of publications,
  3. one example of research output,
  4. a proof of degree completion,
  5. at least two letters of recommendation,
  6. evidence of effective post-secondary teaching experience, and
  7. evidence of successful advising of Masters and Ph.D. level research consistent with international standards.

Selected candidates will be invited to an initial interview. After this stage, candidates may be invited to give a 60 to 75 minutes research presentation and mock lecture.

Project summary and background

With the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the University of Dar es Salaam Research Chair on Forced Displacement (UDSM-RCFD), located in the Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences under the project titled Strengthening Knowledge, Evidence Use and Leadership in the Global South on Forced Displacement: Focus on East Africa has established a Research Chair which conducts research, seminars, policy dialogues, capacity building and outreach activities on forced displacement/displaced.

The UDSM-RCFD is inviting applications for postdoctoral, doctoral, master’s and undergraduate interns who will work in the research, policy and outreach programmes. The UDSM-RCFD is a multidisciplinary entity with members from Geography, Law, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Development Studies, Business School, and Food Science and covers Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. The RCFD focuses on two major types of forced displacement namely the refugees and internally-displaced persons (IDPs). With the IDPs, the research expands to include climate change, disaster, conservation or development-induced displacements such as construction and extraction industries and urban policies. The research conducted under the Chair will embrace a gender-transformative research approach, focusing on the adaptive capacity of the displaced, raising the voices of the displaced people, studying the existing social and legal protection, designing and outreach programmes on empowerment and conducting policy dialogues to ensure democratic and inclusive governance; sustainable and economic inclusion.
