Call for Research Fellows – AIReKEMA Project

In collaboration between 杏吧原创 University and the regional hubs in East Africa (the Refugee Law Project at Makerere University in Uganda), West Africa (the Centre for Migration Studies at the University of Ghana, and Southern Africa (the University of Zululand in South Africa), AIReKEMA (Advancing Indigenous and Refugee Knowledge on Migration in Africa) will select 12 Research Fellows per year. The successful Research Fellows will be those who have deep experience in or who are conducting research on topics related to migration, refugees, conflict resolution, indigenous knowledge, or local communities’ governance in border regions in Africa.

Eligibility

  • Be a postgraduate student (MA or PhD) or early career scholar/community leader with a proven record of engagement in the research themes central to this project
  • Have a record of engaging with policy and program issues relating to migration and refugee issues in border areas
  • Have a vision for how their experience as a Research Fellow will enhance their ability to advance innovative approaches to improving migration outcomes and fostering peacebuilding in border areas.

Given the objectives of this project, priority will be given to applicants who are members of Indigenous or refugee communities in East, West or Southern Africa. Priority will also be given to candidates who contribute to the regional, gender and other forms of diversity within the cohort.

  • Research proposal: Maximum 3-pages, single-spaced, that: Articulates the research puzzle to be addressed
    • Explains the significance of the research in relation to the project鈥檚 goals

    • Outlines the methodology to be used
    • Outlines the timeline for the research to be completed by January 2027
  • Names and contact details for three references

The proposed special issue of the seeks to challenge the marginalization of internal displacement in migration research by critically examining how labels, borders, and binary distinctions between 鈥渋nternal鈥 and 鈥渆xternal鈥 displacement shape both governance and lived experiences across different contexts, while encouraging more inclusive and interconnected understandings of displacement.

Abstract submission deadline: 31 July 2026.

The program provides virtual academic and professional support to early-career scholars who have experienced displacement and are studying or researching refugee and forced migration studies, establishing mentoring partnerships with other scholars in the field. Mentors and mentees can be based anywhere in the world. In addition to personalized support, the program offers opportunities to build academic skills and connections with fellow participants.

Scope of Work

The Communications and Multimedia Project Coordinator will perform a variety of communication tasks in support of the Knowledge Mobilization activities of the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN). Duties will include, but not be limited to:

Social Media and Communications

  • Develop, maintain and improve LERRN project communication strategy and monthly communication work plans.
  • Develop content for social media channels that is consistent, targeted, and impactful and aligned to project goals and objectives.

  • Coordinate and maintain LERRN online presence to increase our digital outreach and engagement (including website, Facebook and Twitter, etc.).


Video Editing and Digital Content Creator

  • Produce short promotional videos, podcasts, and other media content to support LERRN’s core mandate, for use across its social media platforms
  • Assist with pre-production tasks such as scriptwriting, storyboarding, and location scouting.
  • Edit raw footage to create compelling and visually appealing research promotional materials and knowledge mobilization products.

Required Qualifications

  • Be a registered student at 杏吧原创 University, enrolled in Media Production and Design, Film Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Interactive Multimedia and Design, or Journalism for the duration of the contract.
  • Have experience managing social media for research projects.
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience in interviewing, writing, and editing articles or blogs.
  • Demonstrate strong visual storytelling skills, including the ability to create meaningful content and edit videos for diverse audiences.
  • Have experience in scriptwriting, storyboarding, and content conceptualization.
  • Have experience coordinating shoots (e.g., interviews), including scheduling and logistics planning.
  • Possess advanced proofreading skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a supportive and productive team member in a rapidly changing, deadline-oriented environment, with strong time management skills.

This new Special Issue aims to explore how participatory and creative methods are utilized in various migration contexts, highlighting both the challenges and successes of these approaches. It seeks to explore how these methods can produce meaningful interactions and generate more ethical and balanced research outcomes. Key questions include: How have these methodologies impacted the dynamics between researchers and participants? What ethical considerations need to be addressed? How can these methods be employed without falling into tokenism or perpetuating existing power hierarchies and research extractivism?

Call for Proposals: The JRS Special Issues

The Journal of Refugee Studies (JRS) is accepting . JRS is a peer-reviewed journal featuring original, high-quality research related to diverse aspects of forced migration. We welcome proposals that engage with and significantly advance scholarly debates in the field of refugee and forced migration studies.

Special issues typically contain eight to ten original articles, as well as a substantive, article-length introduction by the guest editors, which sets out the state of knowledge on the topic addressed in the special issue, the key questions and debates the special issue engages, and the principal findings and arguments made by the contributors. Special issues should have the potential to inform and invigorate future research on issues of broad importance to the field.

Proposals must be submitted to jrs.editorialoffice@paeditorial.co.uk by 15th August 2025.

Proposals for special issues should be a maximum of 5,000 words, and should include:

  • A title for the proposed special issue
  • An explanation of the questions the special issue will address, and the nature and importance of the expected contribution
  • An explanation of the connections between the proposed articles
  • Abstracts for each article (maximum 10 papers, maximum 400 words per abstract)
  • Brief biographies for each contributor and guest editor (max 200 words each)
  • Details on proposed timelines, and activities related to the proposal (e.g. if the papers have been discussed at a workshop or other forum, to encourage connections and coherence across the special issue)

Proposals that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered.  The editors will review all proposals received by the deadline, and select the successful proposal(s) on the basis of:

  • The innovation and potential scholarly advance made by the proposed special issues special issue
  • The coherence of the overall proposal
  • The originality, quality and diversity of the contributions (e.g. special issues are welcomed that address under-examined topics, regions or populations, or advance critical debates in new ways)

We welcome proposals from researchers from under-represented groups, including those from the Global South. When developing their proposals, we encourage guest editors to consider issues of representation and diversity, including in terms of career stage.

All articles published in the selected special issues will go through the Journal鈥檚 peer review process.

Call for Essays: Gunn Prize for Immigration History

The Gunn Prize celebrates excellence in historical research on immigration to and settlement in Canada. Jointly offered by the , the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN), and the Department of History at 杏吧原创 University, this annual award recognizes outstanding academic work by fourth-year undergraduate or graduate-level students across Canada.

杏吧原创 the Prize

Named in honour of Al Gunn, a founding member and former Secretary of CIHS, the Gunn Prize awards $1,000 to the best historical essay exploring the evolution of Canadian immigration policy or the historical experiences of immigrant communities, places, or events in Canada.

The prize is interdisciplinary, welcoming submissions from students in history, political science, sociology, global studies, communication studies, and other related fields in the social sciences and humanities.

Submission Requirements

  • Deadline: June 30 annually
  • Language: English or French.
  • Length: Maximum 20 pages in length, excluding bibliography.
    • Longer submissions will not be considered.
  • 贵辞谤尘补迟:听1.5 line spacing, one-inch margins in a standard 12-point font such as Times New Roman.
  • Citation: Chicago, APA or MLA style.
  • File types: Word and PDF
  • Submit to: prixgunnprize@carleton.ca

Additional Requirements:

  • Include a cover page with name, contact information (name should not appear on subsequent pages), the course, degree program, and institution for which the paper was written, as well as the current program status of the author.
  • Chapter excerpts from thesis projects will be accepted. In such cases, a short 250-word abstract should accompany the submission to explain the larger project.
  • All essays should be carefully edited for spelling, grammar, and accuracy of content.
  • Note: By submitting their paper, the author consents to it being made public on the CIHS website and the LERRN and Department of History websites at 杏吧原创 University, should their work be selected for the award. The author also consents to revising their piece, for inclusion as a 1,000 word essay in the Canadian Immigration Historical Society Bulletin.
