Mentors and mentees can be based anywhere in the world. In addition to personalized support, the program offers opportunities to build academic skills and connections with fellow participants.

Scope of Work

The Communications and Multimedia Project Coordinator will perform a variety of communication tasks in support of the Knowledge Mobilization activities of the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN). Duties will include, but not be limited to:

Social Media and Communications

  • Develop, maintain and improve LERRN project communication strategy and monthly communication work plans.
  • Develop content for social media channels that is consistent, targeted, and impactful and aligned to project goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate and maintain LERRN online presence to increase our digital outreach and engagement (including website, Facebook and Twitter, etc.).

Video Editing and Digital Content Creator

  • Produce short promotional videos, podcasts, and other media content to support LERRN’s core mandate, for use across its social media platforms
  • Assist with pre-production tasks such as scriptwriting, storyboarding, and location scouting.
  • Edit raw footage to create compelling and visually appealing research promotional materials and knowledge mobilization products.

Required Qualifications

  • Be a registered student at Ӱԭ University, enrolled in Media Production and Design, Film Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Interactive Multimedia and Design, or Journalism for the duration of the contract.
  • Have experience managing social media for research projects.
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience in interviewing, writing, and editing articles or blogs.
  • Demonstrate strong visual storytelling skills, including the ability to create meaningful content and edit videos for diverse audiences.
  • Have experience in scriptwriting, storyboarding, and content conceptualization.
  • Have experience coordinating shoots (e.g., interviews), including scheduling and logistics planning.
  • Possess advanced proofreading skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a supportive and productive team member in a rapidly changing, deadline-oriented environment, with strong time management skills.

JRS is a peer-reviewed journal featuring original, high-quality research related to diverse aspects of forced migration. We welcome proposals that engage with and significantly advance scholarly debates in the field of refugee and forced migration studies.

Special issues typically contain eight to ten original articles, as well as a substantive, article-length introduction by the guest editors, which sets out the state of knowledge on the topic addressed in the special issue, the key questions and debates the special issue engages, and the principal findings and arguments made by the contributors. Special issues should have the potential to inform and invigorate future research on issues of broad importance to the field.

Proposals must be submitted to jrs.editorialoffice@paeditorial.co.uk by 15th August 2025.

Proposals for special issues should be a maximum of 5,000 words, and should include:

  • A title for the proposed special issue
  • An explanation of the questions the special issue will address, and the nature and importance of the expected contribution
  • An explanation of the connections between the proposed articles
  • Abstracts for each article (maximum 10 papers, maximum 400 words per abstract)
  • Brief biographies for each contributor and guest editor (max 200 words each)
  • Details on proposed timelines, and activities related to the proposal (e.g. if the papers have been discussed at a workshop or other forum, to encourage connections and coherence across the special issue)

Proposals that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered. The editors will review all proposals received by the deadline, and select the successful proposal(s) on the basis of:

  • The innovation and potential scholarly advance made by the proposed special issues special issue
  • The coherence of the overall proposal
  • The originality, quality and diversity of the contributions (e.g. special issues are welcomed that address under-examined topics, regions or populations, or advance critical debates in new ways)

We welcome proposals from researchers from under-represented groups, including those from the Global South. When developing their proposals, we encourage guest editors to consider issues of representation and diversity, including in terms of career stage.

All articles published in the selected special issues will go through the Journal’s peer review process.

Jointly offered by the , the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network (LERRN), and the Department of History at Ӱԭ University, this annual award recognizes outstanding academic work by fourth-year undergraduate or graduate-level students across Canada.

Ӱԭ the Prize

Named in honour of Al Gunn, a founding member and former Secretary of CIHS, the Gunn Prize awards $1,000 to the best historical essay exploring the evolution of Canadian immigration policy or the historical experiences of immigrant communities, places, or events in Canada.

The prize is interdisciplinary, welcoming submissions from students in history, political science, sociology, global studies, communication studies, and other related fields in the social sciences and humanities.

Submission Requirements

  • Deadline: June 30 annually
  • Language: English or French.
  • Length: Maximum 20 pages in length, excluding bibliography.
    • Longer submissions will not be considered.
  • ǰ:1.5 line spacing, one-inch margins in a standard 12-point font such as Times New Roman.
  • Citation: Chicago, APA or MLA style.

Additional Requirements:

These awards recognize the outstanding scholarship produced by students and early-career researchers within the academic field of refugee and forced migration studies.The LEDA, in particular, aims to ensure that refugee and forced migration research is shaped by a more inclusive and equitable collective engagement, and has the objective of amplifying and highlighting the voices of those who have lived an experience of forced displacement.

The finalists for both the SEC and LEDA contests will be awarded a $500 prize for one winning research paper in each of the three categories (for a total of 6 winners):

  1. Undergraduate students
  2. Graduate and/or law students
  3. Early-career researchers (defined as having completed their highest degree no more than three years before the competition deadline)

In addition, each of the winners will receive a certificate signed by CARFMS, LERRN, and BHER recognizing their exceptional work and the opportunity to present their paper at a CARFMS conference or virtual event. Submissions may address any issue relevant to refugee and forced migration studies in Canada or elsewhere.

The deadline for the annual competition is March 30, 2025.

Eligibility Requirements for the SEC Contest:

Must be enrolled in Canadian university or have graduated within the last three years and must be resident in Canada. Participants must be the sole author of the submitted work.

Eligibility Requirements for the LEDA Contest:

Must have lived experience of forced migration within the last 15 years. Participants must currently reside outside of Canada. Participants must be the sole author of the submitted work.

Submission Requirements:

  • Papers must be submitted online:ǰ
  • Papers may be submitted in either English or French.
  • Papers must not exceed 7,500 words. Please use 12-point font, double-space, and standard margins.
  • Submissions must include an abstract of no more than 150 words, setting out the main arguments or findings of the paper.
  • LEDA submissions must include (on a separate page) a short biography of no more than 150 words, including a description of the context in which the applicant has lived experience of forced migration.
  • Papers should follow appropriate referencing conventions (e.g., APA, Chicago).

Submissions that do not meet the basic editorial guidelines will not be reviewed by the assessment committee. Participants are limited entering one or the other contest but not both.

The papers will be evaluated through an anonymous review process. Please do not include any identifying information in the paper.

Applicants may only enter one submission in either the CARFMS Lived Experiences of Displacement Essay Contest or the CARFMS Student Essay Contest.

Composition of the evaluation committee will be as follows: 2 members from CARFMS, 1 community research partner with lived experience of displacement (recommended by LERRN), 1 representative from LERRN, and 1 representative from BHER. In following years, the community research partner position will be filled (if so desired) by the previous emerging scholar winner.
