Trained as a sociologist and specializing in qualitative inquiry, Sam\u2019s research interests span the areas of critical criminology, gender and sexuality studies, and the sociology of law. Sam\u2019s work primarily focuses on examining the impacts of, and critiquing, discretionary decision-making in the criminal justice system. Their doctoral research explored legal and administrative decisions and correctional policies to interrogate how social and legal discourses around sex are used to regulate people\u2019s gender identities and expressions in Canada. For their postdoctoral research, Sam is currently exploring how trans people, legal practitioners, and advocacy groups respond to the tension between recently entrenched human rights advancements and their actual implementation in correctional practice. By exposing the gap between policy and practice, Sam\u2019s work joins an array of scholarship calling for us to rethink how sex and gender are regulated beyond legal systems and in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome Sam!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to welcome Sam Ghebrai to the department!
