Marie-Louise Riel: Oral Traditions and the Resilience of Métis Culture in Québec

In this lecture, Professor Sébastien Malette (ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University) will unpack the rhetoric which denies the existence of the historical Métis of Québec. Responding to scholarly accusations that Eastern Métis are “zombies” with no “living” traditions, Professor Malette will present the oral tradition of Marie-Louise Riel, reported as protecting Louis Riel in the Outaouais region during his political exile after the first resistance of 1869-1870. Examples of East-West Métis kinship and solidarity, historical and of recent vintage, that defy the territorial reification of Métis culture as being solely a western phenomenon will also be discussed.
