I approach these questions through empirical research as well as political and legal theory, especially that which intersects with poststructural, feminist, queer, and critical race traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"current-research\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Research<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Law\u2019s Affective Attachments <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The narrative device of awaking in a seemingly alternate legal&nbsp;universe is used widely in film and literature.&nbsp;This project explores this device and its resonances with a more general liberal story, especially deployed in activist campaigns concerning wrongful convictions and indefinite detention, about the possibility of encountering law\u2019s violence as a distinct moment, rather than as everyday experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Museums, Democracy, and Dissent: An Analysis of the 2013 Partnership Between the Canadian Museum of History (CMH) and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generously funded by the 杏吧原创 University Research Office and Mitacs&nbsp;Globalink Research Internships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2013 partnership between the CAPP and the CMH represents the continuation of a well-worn public relations strategy used by oil companies domestically and internationally to help bolster their social image. However, what may make this partnership significant is the current dwindling of formal sites of dissent in Canada\u2019s juridical-politico apparatus. This project investigates the role that informal institutions such as museums can play in the maintenance of democracy as they have the potential to offer space for public dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"editorial-and-committee-activities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Editorial and Committee Activities<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to being on the Organizing Committee of the<a href=\"http:\/\/lawculturehumanities.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <em>Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and the Humanities<\/em> (USA)<\/a>, Editorial Board Member for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cijs.ca\/ijr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Annual Review of Interdisciplinary Justice Research<\/em> (Canada)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/counterpress.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Counterpress<\/em> (UK)<\/a>, as well as member of international networks such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/research\/projects\/current\/regulatingtime.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AHRC <em>Regulating Time Network <\/em>(UK)<\/a><em>,<\/em> I am also Faculty supervisor of the <em>杏吧原创 University Journal of Law and Legal Studies<\/em>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/current-students\/chet-mitchell-law-resource-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chet Mitchell Room<\/a>, and regularly organize <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/events-calendar\/jurisprudence-centre-seminar-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lectures and talks in the department<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/events-calendar\/chet-mitchell-lecture-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">across the university<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"teaching\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Teaching<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I teach <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/5000F-F15-outline-Douglas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LAWS 5000 <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/5000F-F15-outline-Douglas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Theories of Law &amp; Social Transformation<\/a>, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/4100A-F15-outline-Douglas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LAWS 4100&nbsp;<em>Modern Legal Theory<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2502C-W16-outline-Douglas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LAWS 2502&nbsp;<em>Law, State, Citizen<\/em><\/a>. These courses build on my interests in political and legal theory, as well as critical constitutionalism. In these classes students can expect to cover topics such as indigenous and anti-colonial resistance and critiques of sovereignty through feminist, queer, and poststructuralist theoretical approaches. My method of teaching emphasizes the importance of thorough reading in order to broaden intellectual horizons and this is reflected in the course structure. Students who take these courses will experience my passionate commitment to the study of law, not only as gleaned from the Charter or public law textbooks, but also as an urgent need to (re)think our being in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am cross-appointed to the Institute for Political Economy, the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, and am a member of the Sexuality Studies Committee at 杏吧原创.
