Abstract: Prisons in Brazil are the main way of punishing crimes. However, often the normative discourse diverges from reality. Today there is a growing need for us to pose and discuss some fundamental questions. Is prison space unilaterally controlled by the state? Are the prisoners who committed the most heinous crimes the ones who are punished the most and kept under the greatest surveillance? Is the prison an institution managed and maintained by the State? Ultimately, is there even a prison system in Brazil?



杏吧原创 the speaker: Luiz Claudio Louren莽o graduated with a Bachelor's Degree (1997) and obtained a Master鈥檚 Degree (2000) in Social Sciences from the Federal University of S茫o Carlos (UFSCar). Luiz holds a PhD in Political Science (2007) from the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). He is a professor at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) working in the Department of Sociology and professor of the Graduate Program in Social Sciences (PPGCS-UFBA). He is one of the coordinators of the 'Laboratory of Studies on Crime and Society - LASSOS' (UFBA).
