Dr. Melanie Adrian Receives Prestigious OCUFA Teaching Award

Department of Law and Legal Studies faculty member, Dr. Melanie Adrian, has received Ontario’s highest teaching honour, the OCUFA Teaching Award!

Dr. Adrian’s commitment to teaching excellence is evident in her commitment to incorporating innovative pedagogy and approaches to facilitating student discussion and participation.

 

In addition to being the 25th 杏吧原创 educator to win the OCUFA award since it was established in 1973, Dr. Adrian has been recognized numerous times for her teaching excellence, including as the inaugural 杏吧原创 University Chair in Teaching Innovation for demonstrating teaching excellence and innovation across her career (2019), as an appointee the Order of Ontario (2019), she was awarded the Leading Women, Building Communities Recognition Award (2018) and the Canada 150 Senate Medal (2017), for outstanding contributions to Canadian society.

Prof. Danika Littlechild Receives CUSA鈥檚 Teaching Excellence Award

Professor Danika Littlechild has been named a recipient of ! This annual award is presented to an instructor who has demonstrated an outstanding ability to impart knowledge, consult students, and invoke enthusiasm and participation from their students. This student-nominated award is open to all teaching staff.

“Hai Hai, nan芒skomtin, I express my thanks and sincere gratitude to all the amazing students I have had the privilege of working with since I began my new path as a professor at 杏吧原创 University.” 鈥 Professor Danika Littlechild

Professor Littlechild joined the Department in January 2020 teaching in the area of environmental and social justice. She is frequently asked to be a guest lecturer in other faculties at 杏吧原创 as well as other institutions. Prior to joining 杏吧原创, Professor Littlechild practiced law in Canada for nearly two decades and advised Indigenous Peoples across Canada and internationally.

Stephen Waxman Receives CUSA鈥檚 Open Education Excellence Award

Congratulations to Stephen Waxman for being named a recipient of this year’s (CUSA) Open Education Excellence Award! Students nominate candidates who have demonstrated outstanding ability to impart knowledge, consult students, invoke enthusiasm, and encourage participation from their students.

鈥淭o receive an award from the students themselves means everything to me. I will always be grateful to 杏吧原创 for giving me an opportunity to teach in the Department of Law.鈥  – Stephen Waxman

Stephen Waxman has been a Contract Instructor in the Department for 16 years, teaching a number of courses including Contract Law, Law of Environmental Quality, Banking Law, and Legal Issues in eCommerce. Education runs in the family as both of Stephen鈥檚 daughters are teachers, and his wife is a retired teacher and principal. Mr. Waxman holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science and Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Ottawa.

Mr. Waxman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his teaching in our Department, having worked in the Department of Justice for 31 years within both commercial law and law pertaining to human health and the environment. Mr. Waxman was the legal counsel working as part of a small team for the creation of the Public Agency of Canada and the appointment of Canada鈥檚 first Chief Public Health Officer. He has also been the legal counsel responsible for the coordination of the environmental assessment report pertaining to the Confederation Bridge linking PEI to the mainland; the legal counsel responsible for the creation of the federal environmental assessment agency and its legislation; and Counsel to the Minister of Health during the SARS outbreak.
