These instructions will help assist with adding a departmental shared mailbox to your Outlook 365 client on your MAC desktop.

Permission must be granted to the shared mailbox by the Service Desk before a staff member can access the contents of a mailbox.

Adding a Shared Mailbox

To add a shared mailbox to Outlook, follow these steps:

  1. Open Outlook, select Settings menu and click Account.
  2. Click Delegation and Sharing.
  3. In the next window, click Shared With Me then +
  4. Search the mailbox you wish to add to Outlook then click Add.
  5. Click Done then close the Accounts window.
  6. The shared mailbox will now automatically display in your Outlook.

  1. To connect via Remote Desktop from a MAC:

Note: Before trying to connect to your work machine from home, you will need to find out the full name of your PC at Ӱԭ i.e. pcab40x-xx.cunet.carleton.ca You can find this out (PC) by clicking on the Start Menu and then right-clicking on the word ‘Computer’ and selecting Properties. This should then display a window with the computer name in it.

Before proceeding with the instruction, you  must first .

To connect via Remote Desktop from a MAC:

  1. Remote Desktop should be automatically installed on your home version of MAC (if you have Microsoft Office installed). The easiest way of finding it is to type ‘Remote desktop’ into the search tool in the top right hand corner of your screen. If Remote desktop is not found then you can download a copy for free, from the Mac
  2. Once Remote Desktop is installed / running the Remote Desktop connection box will appear. In this box you will need to enter the full computer name of your PC at work i.e. pcab4xx-xx.cunet.carleton.ca
  3. Click Connect and you should be prompted for your username and password. You will need to connect by entering your username in the cunet\username format i.e cunet\firstnamelastname. The password is your normal MyӰԭOne password.
  4. Click connect and it should open up your remote desktop connection to your PC at work.

Network drives are only accessible from Ӱԭ’s network. But when off-campus, you can still reach these network drives by first establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.

Personal Drives (P:\)

You must be logged in and connected to Ӱԭ’s VPN in order to start mapping your network drives.

  1. In the standard Mac desktop, from the Finder menu, click the Go dropdown.
  2. Click ‘Connect to Server’.
    This will open the connection box.
  3. In the server address box, enter the folder path to your own network area (usually called the G: or P: in Windows) in the following format:
    smb://cunas/homedirs$/x/xxxxxx
    Note: The single x is to be replaced with your first initial, ie: for Joe Blogs it would be J and the second set of x’s are to be replaced by your username ie: joeblogs
  4. Click the ‘+’ symbol to add this to your list of favourites for quick reconnection next time.
  5. Click connect.
    You will be prompted to enter your user name and password.
  6. For the username enter yourusername@cunet where your username is your normal CUNET username ie: joeblogs@cunet
  7. Click connect.

Your network drive will be displayed on the screen.

Remember to disconnect from the VPN once you have finished.  To do this, click the black VPN icon along the top menu bar and select ‘Disconnect VPN’.

Departmental Drives (W:\)

You must be logged in and connected to Ӱԭ’s VPN in order to start mapping your network drives.

  1. In the standard Mac desktop, from the Finder menu, click the Go dropdown.
  2. Click ‘Connect to Server’.
    This will open the connection box.
  3. In the server address box, enter the folder path to your own network area (usually called the W: in Windows) in the following format:
    smb://cunas/DEPARTMENT$ (substitute your department’s W: drive name)
  4. Click the ‘+’ symbol to add this to your list of favorites for quick reconnection next time.
  5. Click connect.
    You will be prompted to enter your user name and password.
  6. For the username enter yourusername@cunet where your username is your normal CUNET username ie: joeblogs@cunet
  7. Click connect.

Your network drive will be displayed on the screen.

Remember to disconnect from the VPN once you have finished.  To do this, click the black VPN icon along the top menu bar and select ‘Disconnect VPN’.

V:\ Drive

You must be logged in and connected to Ӱԭ’s VPN in order to start mapping your network drives.

  1. In the standard Mac desktop, from the Finder menu, click the Go dropdown.
  2. Click ‘Connect to Server’.
    This will open the connection box.
  3. In the server address box, enter the folder path to your own network area (usually called the V: in Windows) in the following format:
    smb://cunas/deptfolders$
  4. Click the ‘+’ symbol to add this to your list of favorites for quick reconnection next time.
  5. Click connect.
    You will be prompted to enter your user name and password.
  6. For the username enter yourusername@cunet where your username is your normal CUNET username ie: joeblogs@cunet
  7. Click connect.

Your network drive will be displayed on the screen.

Some staff have other shared folders they need to access from their V: drive and in this case the mapping would be smb://cunet.carleton.ca/allfolders$  (don’t use cunas in the string)

Remember to disconnect from the VPN once you have finished.  To do this, click the black VPN icon along the top menu bar and select ‘Disconnect VPN’.

If you are arriving at this page because you are planning to work from home, please visit our Work from Home checklist, as many faculty and staff-facing systems do not require establishing a VPN connection.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software is required for access to Ӱԭ University resources that are restricted to on-campus use. It provides a secure encrypted channel from your home to the campus and allows access to many campus resources.

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is required when using the Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client. .

By default Students do not get VPN access, any Student requiring VPN access will need to request access

Installing VPN for MacOS

  1. Go to: and login with your MC1 Username and Password.
  2. On the following page, click Continue.

  3. Click on the Download for macOS button.
  4. Open the Cisco Secure Client file you just downloaded, and it will present the .dmg package:
  5. The Install Cisco Secure Client window will appear, click on Continue and accept the
    License agreement.
  6. In some circumstances depending on your computer system configuration, automatic installation may fail and you will be prompted to manually download installer package. Click AnyConnect VPN to continue. Depending on your browser:
    • Google Chrome: open the downloaded .dmg file
    • Microsoft Edge: click Run in the message bar at the bottom of the page
    • Mozilla Firefox: select Save File in the pop-up window. Click on the blue Downloads arrow in the top bar of the browser, and click on the Downloaded File.
  7. Follow the prompts to run the Cisco Secure Client setup.
  8. In many Mac computers, security settings will prompt you to approve the Cisco Anyconnect Extension.
  9. Open the System Preferences > Security and Privacy and following the usual processes, click the Allow button.
  10. Returning to the install screens click through until you reach this message:

Using the Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is required when using the Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client. Instructions on using to use Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client with MFA are found .

Troubleshooting

If trying to reinstall the Cisco VPN software on a MAC and the computer is saying the software is already installed attempt the following fix:

  • Click the Launchpad icon  in the Dock, type Terminal in the search field, then click Terminal … or
  • In the Finder open the /Applications/Utilities folder, then double-click Terminal.

and enter this command:

sudo /opt/cisco/anyconnect/bin/vpn_uninstall.sh

You will be prompted for the local computer password (not mc1 pw).  Answer ‘Yes’ when prompted to remove all profiles and certificates.
