Changes Are Coming to 杏吧原创.ca /its/2019/changes-are-coming-to-carleton-ca/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=changes-are-coming-to-carleton-ca Mon, 13 May 2019 14:09:38 +0000 /its/?p=25913 Four years ago, we redesigned the 杏吧原创.ca home page and it has served us well by bringing in over 100,000 visitors each month.

However, four years is a long time in the digital world and we are happy to say that it鈥檚 time for a fresh new look.

When approaching the refresh, the Department of University Communications and the Web Services Department within ITS looked at research on user behavior and preferences, best practices, and trends in web design.

What Will Not Change

Although the design has changed, the goals of the website have not.

From a content perspective, the new home page will continue to:

  • Showcase 杏吧原创 as a leading university
  • Attract new students
  • Provide a gateway for visitors to easy navigate to the information they need

From a design perspective, as with the previous design, the team worked to create a site that is:

  • Accessible/AODA compliant
  • Mobile Friendly
  • Reliable and Fast

What Will Change

Here are five key things that will change on the carleton.ca home page:

  1. It will be brighter. The dark background will be lighter.
  2. The search bar will be moved to the top of the navigation. Although a frequently used feature, the search bar proved to be challenging when working with home page images.
  3. Login links to cuLearn, 杏吧原创 Central, Portal, and Library will be moved. A new 鈥楯ump to鈥 drop down menu that shortcuts to these pages will appear at the top right.
  4. Tabs will be gone. Information will no longer be hidden behind tabs that require clicking.
  5. New content sections will be added. This includes a video section, curated events to better showcase what鈥檚 going on at 杏吧原创, and social media integration.

Want to see what it looks like? Come to our home page reveal event on May 16th!

Shopping Online This Holiday Season? Be Careful of These Three Things /its/2018/shopping-online-this-holiday-season-be-careful-of-these-three-things/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=shopping-online-this-holiday-season-be-careful-of-these-three-things Mon, 03 Dec 2018 17:23:28 +0000 /its/?p=25476 How is it December already?! Chances are you have some holiday shopping to do (or start), and if you鈥檙e like me you鈥檒l turn to online shops.聽 It’s fast, easy, convenient, and, in some cases, I can have my purchases wrapped and shipped directly to my loved ones.

But before you open that browser, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Thing #1: Criminals are trying to steal our information: protect your credit card

  • Use a credit card rather than your debit card, if possible. You may even want to consider using a separate 鈥榦nline shopping鈥 credit card with a lower limit.
  • Avoid saving your credit card number on websites.
  • When making purchases online, check that there is a green bar in the URL along with a certificate that verifies that they are a trusted site. look for the https, not http.

Thing #2: Public networks are not safe: connect with caution

  • Avoid shopping on public wifi or sharing any person information. Anyone can gain access to a public network and monitor your activity or steal your personal information.
  • If public wifi must be used to conduct transactions, use a VPN service to help ensure a secure connection.

Thing #3: Phoney聽sites are out there: think before you click聽

  • Be wary of phoney shipping status emails. You are likely expecting more package deliveries this time of year and cybercriminals seek to exploit this by sending fake shipment and delivery notification emails and text messages. If you鈥檙e not sure if an email is legit, go directly to the tracking website. Don鈥檛 click on the links in the email.
  • Know how to spot a fake pop-up ad. If an ad for an amazing deal pops up while you鈥檙e browsing, go with your gut. If it seems too good to be true it probably is. Don鈥檛 click on it. Just hit the 鈥渪鈥 and continue to sites you know are legitimate.
  • Beware of texts that promise big discounts on high-quality brands, often written in urgent language, poor grammar, and with an abundance of emojis and punctuation.

Check out our IT security tips page for more ways to stay safe online.

Tips to Practice Safe Browsing /its/2018/tips-to-practice-safe-browsing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tips-to-practice-safe-browsing Mon, 22 Oct 2018 20:00:21 +0000 /its/?p=25311 It鈥檚聽Cyber Security Awareness Month! This is a time to help better understand the cyber threats we face online and the simple steps we can take to minimize those risks.聽This week we鈥檙e talking about cyber security beyond 杏吧原创.

Taking control of your own cyber security begins with understanding one simple fact: the Internet can be a hazardous place. Protecting yourself can be easy when you make cyber safety a priority and become aware of the most common threats and risks to your online security.

Here are three things you can do to protect yourself when browsing:

Know your Options for Browser and OS Security

  • Use the drop down menus on your browser to set your options. Always set your own options for optimum security.
  • Keep your browser and OS updated with the newest version. OS manufacturers release regular updates called ‘patches’ or ‘fixes’ to improve security. Enable automatic updates so your device will download and install these fixes as soon as they’re available. Make sure 鈥榓utomatic updates鈥 are turned on.
  • Always log out of services and close your browser when you鈥檙e done. This is particularly important when using websites that contain sensitive information.

Use Public Wi-Fi Safely

  • Make use of a VPN service, to ensure all your traffic is encrypted.
  • Confirm the name of the network before connecting to ensure that you are not trying to connect to a fake access point that was set up by hackers.
  • Turn off 鈥榓utomatic connectivity鈥 to prevent your device from automatically reconnecting to rogue networks

Whether you’re banking, connecting with friends, working, or just passing the time, when you’re online you are never alone. Just as you’d watch your back, your family, and your belongings in a busy public place, you need to be equally cautious online.
