Cyber Security Awareness Month – How to Spot a Phishing Attempt /its/2019/cyber-security-awareness-month-how-to-spot-a-phishing-attempt/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cyber-security-awareness-month-how-to-spot-a-phishing-attempt Tue, 08 Oct 2019 15:44:03 +0000 /its/?p=26227 It鈥檚 Cyber Security Awareness Month and this week we鈥檙e talking about email.

Email is one of the easiest ways for cyber criminals to target ordinary citizens.听 Here are a few risks to be aware of when it comes to your email:

    • A weak email account password could leave your personal information vulnerable – and use two-factor authentication when possible
    • 听may be sent as an attachment in an email and allow criminals access to your information.
    • 听can spread through email to your entire contact list without you knowing it.
    • 听can trick you into opening attachments or giving up personal information. They appear to be emails from organizations or companies you trust, but they’re often the gateway to identity theft.
    • 听can get through your filter and inundate you with unsolicited email.

If you receive an听email from an address you don鈥檛 recognize, your first thought should be: is this email legitimate? 听But know that malicious emails can also come from an address that you do recognize 鈥 perhaps their account got hacked and is now being used to spam people.

There鈥檚 a good chance an email is a phishing attempt if:

    • It asks you for your password or directs you to a web form asking for your password
    • If the link within the body of the message points to a non-杏吧原创 email address
    • The subject line is in all caps
    • There is a call for immediate action 鈥 鈥渄ownload this now鈥 or 鈥渃onfirm you email identity now鈥 or 鈥渃lick on the link below鈥
    • There are spelling or grammatical errors in the email

It鈥檚 important to be able to recognize a phishing attempt and, most importantly, not be baited.

What do you do if you receive a phishing email? A good rule of thumb is to automatically delete anything that looks out of the ordinary or if you’re not quite sure, you can forward it along to the ITS Service Desk.听听

    Successful Phishing Campaigns

If successful, phishing scams can have serious repercussions.

Some successful phishing attempts that made the news include the , Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, and a for which impacted payroll.

    Other Risks to your Email

In addition to phishing, here are a few risks to always be aware of when it comes to your email:

    • A weak email account password could leave your personal information vulnerable – .
    • may be sent as an attachment in an email and allow criminals access to your information.
    • can spread through email to your entire contact list without you knowing it.

External Email Tagging Being Implemented to Combat Phishing /its/2019/external-email-tagging/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=external-email-tagging Thu, 25 Apr 2019 14:13:03 +0000 /its/?p=25894 At 杏吧原创 we often see phishing emails that appear to be from @carleton.ca addresses, when in fact they are fake accounts created with malicious intent. These emails often encourage the recipient to click on a link and provide sensitive information, like their username and password.

To better protect 杏吧原创 staff, faculty, and students against these threats, ITS will be implementing external email tagging.听 Starting on May 6, all emails received from senders outside the CUNET network will be marked with [External Email].

After May 6, if you receive an email that appears to be from an @carleton.ca email address, but has been marked [External Email], it鈥檚 a warning that the email may not be legitimate.

In addition, email that have links in them will also include the following 鈥榯ag鈥 or warning, at the bottom of messages.

Text in warning message reads: Caution: This email contains links to content or websites. Always be cautious when clicking on external links or attachments. If in doubt, please forward suspicious emails to听phishing@carleton.ca.

It鈥檚 important to note that an email message with this warning does not necessarily mean the email is malicious 鈥 only that the recipient should take caution before clicking any links or attachments included within the email.

For questions or additional information, please email the ITS Service Desk at its.service.desk@carleton.ca or call 520-3700.

Cyber Security: Our Shared Responsibility /its/2018/cyber-security-our-shared-responsibility/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cyber-security-our-shared-responsibility Fri, 28 Sep 2018 14:54:14 +0000 /its/?p=25144 Cyber Security Awareness Month is an internationally recognized campaign held each October to inform the public of the importance of cyber security. This campaign is focused on helping us be more secure online, by knowing simple steps to take to protect ourselves, our families, our workplace and our devices.

Humans are the first line of defence in cyber security. 听We can have a stringent password policy that stipulates complex passwords and mandatory password changes, but if Bob is falling for phishing attacks, reusing passwords across multiple platforms, and just not safeguarding his passwords, then he’s putting himself at risk.

Her are some things you (and Bob) can do to stay safe:

    • Protect your accounts with strong authentication.听 Create a strong password (try using pass phrases as opposed to words), have separate passwords for every account, and use two-factor authentication wherever possible.
    • Safeguard your personal information.:听Information about you, such as your purchase history or location, has value 鈥 just like money. Be thoughtful about who gets that information and how it鈥檚 collected through apps and websites.
    • Think before you act:听Be wary of communications that implore you to act immediately, offer something that sounds too good to be true or ask for personal information. When in doubt, throw it out.
    • Back it up:听Protect your valuable work, music, photos and other digital information by making an electronic copy and storing it safely.

No individual, business or government entity is solely responsible for securing the internet, and everyone must play a role in protecting their part of cyberspace, including the devices and networks they use. If everyone does their part our interconnected world will be safer, more resistant from attacks and more resilient if an attack occurs.

This content was produced using material from the American Stop Think Connect campaign and the Canadian Get Cyber Safe campaign.

    • Do not assume that email is private.
