New 15 Minute Lock Screen Policy on CUNET Connected Systems /its/2019/new-15-minute-lock-screen-policy-on-cunet-connected-systems/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-15-minute-lock-screen-policy-on-cunet-connected-systems Thu, 18 Jul 2019 14:23:11 +0000 /its/?p=26030 On Tuesday July 30, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., ITS will be implementing a聽new policy to lock computer screens after 15 minutes of inactivity.聽 This industry standard configuration will be applied to all faculty and staff Windows workstations and laptops that are connected to the CUNET domain.

This change will address a security concern of staff walking away from their devices without manually locking them.聽 This 15 minute lock screen policy will help mitigate the risk of unauthorized access to workstations and university data.

Once the policy is applied, your Windows desktop session will automatically trigger the screensaver and lock the screen after 15 minutes of inactivity.聽 Once the screen is locked, your password will be required to re-access your workstation.

If you currently have a screensaver enabled, and your screensaver settings are set to less than 15 minutes, the lesser value will be honored.

This policy has been聽previously聽applied to聽all ITS staff, with no impact.

Note that ITS public lab, classroom and kiosk systems are not impacted by this change, as they already have similar mechanisms in place.

If you require clarification, please contact the ITS Service Desk.

New Software Licensing Agreements

杏吧原创 has acquired new university-wide licenses for the IBM聽SPSS聽software and NVivo Plus. Both are now available to all faculty, staff and students, free of charge.

  • The IBM SPSS聽software is available for download at聽 (My杏吧原创One login required). Please ensure that you have enough disk space on your device/computer to install this software, as it is quite large, (up to 2GB).聽聽 For more information on disk space requirements, visit聽.
  • The NVivo Plus software is available for download at (My杏吧原创One login required).

Qualtrics Research Core software has been added to this initiative.聽 It will also be free of charge for all faculty, staff, and students.

These licenses are in addition to the software packages already available free of charge for faculty, staff, and students (MATLAB, Trend Micro, MS-Office 365, STATA, and more). Visit our Site-Licensed Software webpage for the full list of software packages available.

Increased secure data storage capacity

ITS and OVPRI will be increasing the current secure data storage capacity for researchers from 60 TB to over 400 TB.聽 This storage is backed-up, replicated and stored in 杏吧原创鈥檚 secure data centers.

Along with this increased capacity, researchers will have the capability to share their data with delegated users.

Research Computing Services

Research Computing Services (RCS)聽personnel support and assist researchers in using Advanced Research Computing (ARC) and High-Performance resources available on- and off-campus. This support includes tutorials, training, workshops as well as assistance with porting and optimizing existing code.

Computer Purchases for Business Use /its/2018/computer-purchases-for-business-use/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=computer-purchases-for-business-use Wed, 14 Nov 2018 15:54:56 +0000 /its/?p=25398 Are you in need of new tablet, desktop, or notebook for business purposes? Be sure to order an ITS recommended system from one of our preferred vendors.

What is a Preferred Vendor?

A preferred vendor has an established contract with 杏吧原创 University for a specific product list and contracted price. These contracts have been pre-negotiated by Purchasing Services on behalf of the community and follow the Broader Public Sector Procurement Directive (BPS) requirements as set out by the Province of Ontario.

Why Order a Recommended System from a Preferred Vendor?

The recommended computer systems from preferred vendors are fully supported by ITS, have 杏吧原创鈥檚 standard image adapted to them and meet all of our ITS security and CUnet domain membership requirements.

Ordering a non-standard system could cost you more time (ITS has to test and locate driver packs, and load the standard image) and money (ITS charges a fee for the extra time it takes to do this image adaptation work).

How to Order

Desktops, Notebooks and Mac PCs can be acquired聽via a purchase order (PO) directly through . Once logged into eShop search 鈥溞影稍 Image鈥澛爐o find the systems that already have ITS software images adapted to them and receive full ITS support.

View our Computer Purchases page for a list of ITS recommended tablets, desktops and notebooks from our preferred vendors.

Tips to Practice Safe Browsing /its/2018/tips-to-practice-safe-browsing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tips-to-practice-safe-browsing Mon, 22 Oct 2018 20:00:21 +0000 /its/?p=25311 It鈥檚聽Cyber Security Awareness Month! This is a time to help better understand the cyber threats we face online and the simple steps we can take to minimize those risks.聽This week we鈥檙e talking about cyber security beyond 杏吧原创.

Taking control of your own cyber security begins with understanding one simple fact: the Internet can be a hazardous place. Protecting yourself can be easy when you make cyber safety a priority and become aware of the most common threats and risks to your online security.

Here are three things you can do to protect yourself when browsing:

Know your Options for Browser and OS Security

  • Use the drop down menus on your browser to set your options. Always set your own options for optimum security.
  • Keep your browser and OS updated with the newest version. OS manufacturers release regular updates called ‘patches’ or ‘fixes’ to improve security. Enable automatic updates so your device will download and install these fixes as soon as they’re available. Make sure 鈥榓utomatic updates鈥 are turned on.
  • Always log out of services and close your browser when you鈥檙e done. This is particularly important when using websites that contain sensitive information.

Use Public Wi-Fi Safely

  • Make use of a VPN service, to ensure all your traffic is encrypted.
  • Confirm the name of the network before connecting to ensure that you are not trying to connect to a fake access point that was set up by hackers.
  • Turn off 鈥榓utomatic connectivity鈥 to prevent your device from automatically reconnecting to rogue networks

Whether you’re banking, connecting with friends, working, or just passing the time, when you’re online you are never alone. Just as you’d watch your back, your family, and your belongings in a busy public place, you need to be equally cautious online.

Confidential Printing Now Available for Staff and Faculty /its/2018/confidential-printing-now-available-for-staff-and-faculty/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=confidential-printing-now-available-for-staff-and-faculty Tue, 02 Oct 2018 16:05:16 +0000 /its/?p=25184 A new printing option called 鈥淐onfidential Printing鈥 is now available and mapped to all Staff and Faculty CUNET computers.

In a standard printing environment, a job is sent directly to the printer for immediate printing. If the printed material is forgotten it not only wastes ink and paper, but presents a security risk if the material was sensitive or confidential.

The Confidential Printing queue provides a simple solution that places your jobs in a holding state until you authenticate with your Campus Card and release it at any Konica Minolta printer. Print jobs will be held in a queue for 12 hours.

This is an optional service available on both Mac and PC.

August IT Security Tip: Protect Your Personal Information /its/2018/august-it-security-tip-protect-your-personal-information/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=august-it-security-tip-protect-your-personal-information Tue, 31 Jul 2018 15:39:23 +0000 /its/?p=24957 In this month’s IT security tip we’re talking about protecting not only your personal information, but your online identity as well.

What you post online can come back to haunt you.

Here are four simple tips to help you protect your personal information:

  • Limit the amount of personal information you post when using social media tools such as Facebook, Instragram, Twitter and YouTube.
  • Do not assume that email is private.
  • Limit the amount of personal information (such as SIN, credit card numbers, banking information, drivers license number, etc.) you store on your computer. If your computer is lost or stolen this can be valuable information.
  • Log off, lock your screen, or use a password-activated screensavers when stepping away from your computer.
