This service allows you to:

  • Change your password (if you still know it)
  • Reset your password (if you have forgotten it)

While our Service Desk is always here to help, password resets can now be done without the assistance of a Service Desk representative.

How It Works

You will need to use at least two different methods to verify who you are when resetting your password. They can include:

  • the Microsoft Authenticator app,
  • an alternate authenticator app or hardware token,
  • a telephone number or
  • a personal email address.

Multiple methods ensure security in case one is physically lost or compromised.

How You Can Prepare

Take a moment to update your authentication methods to be ready for this system. We recommend having three options for flexibility, such as:

  • the Microsoft Authenticator app,
  • a personal email address that is not tied to your university account and
  • a telephone number you commonly have access to.

You can with your MC1 (@cunet.carleton.ca) account.

How to Use It

Once set up, visit the self-service site to reset your password. Follow the instructions on the page. For more details, check the ITS Help Centre.

5 Tips to Keep your Passwords Safe and Secure /its/2019/5-tips-to-keep-your-passwords-safe-and-secure/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=5-tips-to-keep-your-passwords-safe-and-secure Tue, 22 Oct 2019 14:51:40 +0000 /its/?p=26254 It’s Cyber Security Awareness Month and this week we’re talking about passwords.

We are all responsible for the safety of our own accounts, whether they be our banking credentials, email credentials, or MyÐÓ°ÉÔ´´One credentials. Here are some tips to help you keep your accounts safe and secure:

  1. Enable two-factor authentication. This is the single most effective way to keep your accounts secure.
  2. Never respond to email requests for your password, even if the email appears to come from ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´. These are phishing attempts in order to steal your information.
  3. Never share your password with others.
  4. When creating your password, use a minimum eight characters in length and include upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters.
  5. Use different passwords for your accounts. For example, do not use your Facebook password for your MyÐÓ°ÉÔ´´One account. – Help keep these passwords straight by using a .

In the current system, these individuals are able to login to ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Central using their default password. Once the new system is in place, new users will be directed to myone.carleton.ca to change their password and select their security questions. Once they’ve set up their account, they can proceed to ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Central via a link from within myone.carleton.ca

In preparation for the switchover password resets and account creations will be unavailable Aug. 16, 17, and 18.

External Email Tagging Being Implemented to Combat Phishing /its/2019/external-email-tagging/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=external-email-tagging Thu, 25 Apr 2019 14:13:03 +0000 /its/?p=25894 At ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ we often see phishing emails that appear to be from @carleton.ca addresses, when in fact they are fake accounts created with malicious intent. These emails often encourage the recipient to click on a link and provide sensitive information, like their username and password.

To better protect ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ staff, faculty, and students against these threats, ITS will be implementing external email tagging.  Starting on May 6, all emails received from senders outside the CUNET network will be marked with [External Email].

After May 6, if you receive an email that appears to be from an @carleton.ca email address, but has been marked [External Email], it’s a warning that the email may not be legitimate.

In addition, email that have links in them will also include the following ‘tag’ or warning, at the bottom of messages.

Text in warning message reads: Caution: This email contains links to content or websites. Always be cautious when clicking on external links or attachments. If in doubt, please forward suspicious emails to phishing@carleton.ca.

It’s important to note that an email message with this warning does not necessarily mean the email is malicious – only that the recipient should take caution before clicking any links or attachments included within the email.

For questions or additional information, please email the ITS Service Desk at its.service.desk@carleton.ca or call 520-3700.

Managing your Privacy /its/2019/data-privacy-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=data-privacy-day Mon, 28 Jan 2019 15:47:01 +0000 /its/?p=25646 Today, January 28, is Data Privacy Day.  It is an international effort to empower individuals and business to respect privacy, safeguard data and enable trust.

Data about you can be used in a variety of ways, sometimes in ways you wouldn’t expect or even approve.  That’s why it’s important to understand the value of your personal information and how to manage it when possible.

Here are three ways to manage your privacy:

  1. Personal information is like money.  Value it.  Protect it.
Be thoughtful about how your personal information is collected through apps and websites.  This information can often be found in a company’s privacy policy.
  2. Own your online presence.
Set the privacy and security setting on at least one service and/or device to your comfort level for sharing.
  3. Lock down your login.
If you are a staff or faculty member at ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´, set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your MyÐÓ°ÉÔ´´One account.  Students, choose one of your online accounts and turn on the strongest authentication tools available.  Your usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts like email, banking and social media.
