His research \u2013 which explores the nexus between deterrence theory and emerging security considerations, domains, and environments \u2013 has shaped the fourth, and now fifth, generation of deterrence scholarship. Among his over two dozen journal publications, his articles on the subject of deterring terrorism and cyber deterrence have been published in top-ranked IR journals, including\u00a0<em>International Security<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Journal of Strategic Studies<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Security Studies<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Studies in Conflict &amp; Terrorism<\/em>. His books include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambriapress.com\/cambriapress.cfm?template=4&amp;bid=786\"><em>Deterrence by Denial: Theory and Practice<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(eds., Cambria Press, 2021),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/15305.html\"><em>Deterring Rational Fanatics<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sup.org\/books\/title\/?id=21107\"><em>Deterring Terrorism: Theory and Practice<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(eds., Stanford University Press, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Since joining NPSIA in 2015, his broader scholarship has been awarded over $1M (CAD) in external research funding: he was awarded a Government of Canada SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2016-2017), a prestigious SSHRC Insight Grant (2020-2025), and a Government of Ontario Early Researcher Award (2021-2026) to study state and non-state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/01402390.2018.1563779?journalCode=fjss20\">cyber deterrence<\/a>; a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant (2022-2023) to explore foresight in public service; two major IDEaS grants (2018-2021) and several MINDS grant (2019, 2020) from the Department of National Defence to explore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-94-6265-419-8_21\">Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deterrence<\/a>; several smaller research grants from the Canadian Network on Terrorism, Security, and Society (TSAS); and a major\u00a0<em>Mitacs<\/em>\u00a0grant (2020-2022) to explore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0020702021992855\">emerging technology<\/a>\u00a0and Canadian defence policy and strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Wilner teaches classes on terrorism and violent radicalization, intelligence in international affairs, strategic foresight in international affairs, and a capstone course on Canadian security policy. Past capstone partners have included FINTRAC, Public Safety Canada, Global Affairs Canada, and Policy Horizons Canada.
