IPIS is delighted to highlight Jasmine Doobay‑Joseph, an M.IPIS student specializing in Cybersecurity, for publishing her first article with the NATO Association of Canada. Her piece, “F,” analyzes how combat clothing and protective equipment in the Canadian Armed Forces have historically been based on male body proportions, creating performance and mobility challenges for women.

Drawing on NATO research and lessons from Ukraine, she argues that women‑specific equipment is not a luxury but an operational necessity that improves mobility, reduces fatigue, and strengthens overall force readiness. She concludes that better‑fitting gear is essential for sustaining and advancing women’s participation in the CAF.

IPIS is proud to congratulate Maria Ovcharenko, recipient of the Ukrainian Canadian Youth Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership and meaningful contributions to the Ukrainian community and to Canada.

This year’s Congress brought together over 400 delegates from across the country, with participants noting the strong engagement across workshops and plenaries. The event featured several distinguished speakers, including Hon. David McGuinty, Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Hon. Anita Anand, Ambassador Andrii Plakhotniuk, and Nobel Laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk.

Maria’s achievement reflects the strength and impact of emerging Ukrainian Canadian leaders, and IPIS is delighted to celebrate her success.

It is with great sadness to announce the sudden and tragic passing of Dr. Wayne Boone on Saturday, June 20th, 2015. In addition to being one of the founders of the IPIS Program, Dr. Boone was an invaluable presence in our program. He provided immense support to the growth of the program, made numerous contributions, instilled leadership and was a pillar for many students and the surrounding community.

The administration of the program, its professors, students and alumni will always remember Dr. Boone’s efforts and contributions to the safety and security community, and our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and those impacted his passing. He will be greatly missed by the many individuals whose lives he has touched.

As an expression of sympathy, donations in Dr. Boone’s memory to the Military Police Fund for Blind Children would be gratefully appreciated by the family.

We are thrilled to be offering a new degree in our program, which is a recently established Master of Engineering in Infrastructure Protection and International Security! This new degree is now available for eligible students beginning the program in Fall 2015, and will allow engineers in our program to specialize in our unique area of study and graduate with a valuable degree designation.

Students with an engineering background will take a program of study that combines traditional engineering courses related to infrastructure protection (such as infrastructure engineering design or systems engineering and security) with more general courses on CIP risk management and security from a social science and policy perspective.

In order to be considered eligible for admission into the M.Eng (IPIS) is a B.Eng degree (or equivalent). Students will normally be expected to have a B+ average (or higher) to be considered for admission into the program. We welcome engineers with a broad range of specialties and backgrounds to apply to this new degree.

On April 23rd 2015, the Canadian Club of Ottawa hosted a special luncheon at the Chateau Laurier in partnership with the Security and Policy Institute at the University of Ottawa, which featured Geopolitical Expert and International Columnist, Kamran Bokhari as the guest speaker.  Three of our IPIS students attended this exciting event, along with numerous trade officers, CEOs, geopolitical consultants and scholars. Our program was given special recognition for its contributions by the President of the Canadian Club of Ottawa.

We braved the cold to view a mock bomb disposal demonstration on March 18th, 2015 as part of an IPIS course on Explosives taught by Professor Ettore Contestabile in the Mackenzie Quad. The Ottawa Police Service bomb disposal unit demonstrated a robot using highly pressurized water to “blow up” a package. This is just one method of bomb disposal, and this demonstration is one of the many unique learning activities offered in our program.
