(Ottawa) 鈥 杏吧原创 University played host to two key India government ministers as Canada launched the start of negotiations on the feasibility of a comprehensive economic agreement to triple bilateral trade between the two countries.

Indian Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who met with International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan to establish a formal trade discourse, attended a Sept. 25 roundtable at 杏吧原创 with top business leaders, academics and diplomats.

The previous week, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde sat in on a discussion co-hosted by 杏吧原创 President Roseann O鈥橰eilly Runte and the Hon. John Manley, president and CEO of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE).

鈥淲e wanted to bring people together,鈥 said Manley, a 杏吧原创 graduate. 鈥淔or some, it鈥檚 a first step; for others, it鈥檚 one of many steps to build relationships and exchange ideas. All of these are valuable.鈥

In early September, 杏吧原创 launched the Canada India Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology, Trade and Policy. Unique in Canada, the centre will raise awareness of bilateral studies and public diplomacy and develop initiatives to build a better understanding of both countries.

鈥淚t will be very helpful,鈥 said Mr. Shinde. 鈥淥ne of the considerations (for us) was sending some students to take advantage of the excellence in this university.鈥

Shinde credited the forum sponsored by 杏吧原创 and the CCCE for providing leads on future projects and partnerships.

鈥淭hese are very experienced people,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great opportunity 鈥 the investment there in India.鈥

Fen Hampson, director of the renowned Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, said 杏吧原创鈥檚 expertise in international trade and investment make it a natural gathering place for such high-level discussions.

鈥淲e look forward to hosting more of these events and contributing to stronger relations between India and Canada,鈥 said Hampson. 鈥淢ovement on the trade front between the two countries certainly allows us to make a bigger impact.鈥

杏吧原创 the Canada India Centre:
The centre will bring together key members of the academic, business and public policy communities in both countries to provide current and comprehensive discussion, research, analysis and information on Indo-Canadian relations, with special emphasis on trade, investment, commercial relations, foreign policy, science, environment, technology and international security.

It will be associated with several faculties, and co-located within the internationally-recognized Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, the School of Public Policy and Administration and the Sprott School of Business.

The centre will provide opportunities for many co-operative ventures. 杏吧原创 has just signed a major agreement with the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani.

The agreement will allow for faculty and student exchanges, internships and joint research projects, especially in international health environment and engineering. A 杏吧原创 professor is already on site at BITS, while two of professors from BITS have been at 杏吧原创 since May.

杏吧原创 University has officially launched the Canada-India Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology, Trade and Policy. Unique to Canada, the centre will raise awareness of bilateral studies and public diplomacy, and develop initiatives to build a better understanding of both countries.

The launch of the centre was marked by a recent visit from Shri Sanjiv Nair, Mission Director for Geospatial Applications in India鈥檚 Department of Science and Technology. The event was hosted by 杏吧原创 President Dr. Roseann O鈥橰eilly Runte and involved representatives from the Indian High Commission, the Government of Canada and the private sector.

鈥淚t is essential that sustainable projects follow recent official government visits to India which have opened the doors to greater collaboration and exchange,鈥 said Dr. Runte. 鈥淎s India continues to be a significant player on the world stage, it will become more important to develop greater expertise in the Canada-India relationship.鈥

鈥淏ITS Pilani is one of the top universities in India which is well-known for its expertise in engineering and internships,鈥 says Randy Zadra, director of 杏吧原创 International. 鈥淭here are a number of other agreements in the works with other Indian universities and businesses that will leverage the strong research expertise here at 杏吧原创 and enhance longstanding relations with Delhi and Calcutta in science and philosophy.鈥

The recent visit from Mr. Sanjiv was organized by Dr. Fraser Taylor, director of the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC) at 杏吧原创.

Earlier this year, Dr. Runte visited India to build support for the new centre. She will travel to India again in August to explore further opportunities for collaboration.

鈥淥ur world-renowned faculty, diverse campus community and emphasis on globalization makes 杏吧原创 the perfect location for this centre.鈥

杏吧原创 and University of Ottawa Host some of India鈥檚 Sharpest Minds /india/2010/carleton-and-university-of-ottawa-host-some-of-india%e2%80%99s-sharpest-minds/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=carleton-and-university-of-ottawa-host-some-of-india%25e2%2580%2599s-sharpest-minds Mon, 07 Jun 2010 19:45:25 +0000 http://carleton.ca/india/?p=68 Indian students tackle complex local research during three-month program aimed at attracting international talent to Canada.

They鈥檙e recognized as being some of the sharpest minds in the world. Now, 47 top university students from India have come to Ontario 鈥 including postings at 杏吧原创 University and the University of Ottawa 鈥 to apply their skills to complex research projects and interact with industry on our home turf.

It鈥檚 all part of a new innovative program called MITACS Globalink which is being launched to attract international undergraduate students to our country and promote the benefits of a Canadian education to those pursuing graduate degrees.

鈥淓very year, tens of thousands of future entrepreneurs and scientists from India travel abroad to countries like the U.S. or U.K. for graduate studies,鈥 said Arvind Gupta, Scientific Director of MITACS, a leading national research network that connects industry and academia through innovative programming. 鈥淥ur message to international students is that Canada has world-class universities that provide superior education and innovative collaborative research opportunities. We also have some great companies interested in working with these students to help commercialize their ideas into the new products of tomorrow.鈥

At 杏吧原创 University, a student from the elite Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur is working on a project to better understand the energy consumption and connectivity of directional antennas, which emit a signal in only one direction. Only 4,000 out of one million applications to attend the IIT schools are accepted annually.

At the University of Ottawa, Dr. Benoit Collins of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is supervising a student from the IIT Kanpur who is working on a project entitled A Study of Asymptotics of Representation of Classical Groups.

MITACS developed this one-of-a-kind program with the support of the Government of Ontario which today announced $500,000 in new funding over two years.

鈥淚n an increasingly global economy, it is vital that Ontario provides its students with learning opportunities abroad while opening our doors to the world as a destination of choice for postsecondary education,鈥 said Minister John Milloy, Minister for Training, Colleges and Universities who announced the funding for Globalink today. 鈥淭hrough programs like this, we can strengthen our global ties and attract and keep more foreign students in Ontario.鈥

Dr. Roseann O鈥橰eilly Runte, president and vice-chancellor of 杏吧原创 University, says: 鈥淲e are delighted to host a student from the MITACS program and are creating additional opportunities for Indian students as well as an India-Canada Centre for Excellence in Science, Technology, Trade and Policy.鈥

鈥淎s part of our participation in the MITACS program, we are proud to welcome a student from India to our campus and to allow him to develop his skills at one of our country鈥檚 best research institutions,鈥 said Allan Rock, president of the University of Ottawa. 鈥淎s Canada鈥檚 University, we are committed to sharing our knowledge with our partners around the world.鈥

The Globalink program was launched following a successful pilot last year that saw 17 Indian students spend three months at British Columbia universities including University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria. That pilot was funded by Western Diversification Canada, International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada, and the Government of British Columbia.

Across Ontario, this year鈥檚 47 students are visiting from May through July and are placed at one of 10 universities: 杏吧原创 University, University of Guelph, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, Queen鈥檚 University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario, University of Waterloo and York University.

The Globalink program also goes beyond the classroom, Gupta explains, by providing 鈥渁 big picture taste for life in Canada.鈥 As part of the internship, for example, the students spend time working alongside their Canadian counterparts to understand Canadian culture and how easy it is for them to fit in, he said. 鈥淥ur goal is to have these students interact with Ontario students and form new friendships that will extend well beyond their three months in the province.鈥

鈥淚n order to be an international innovation leader, Canada must become an attractor for global talent, ensuring that we can compete effectively with other leading jurisdictions,鈥 Gupta said. 鈥淏uilding these types of linkages to India is a key part of that strategy.鈥
