The Springer journal Shock Waves has just published the first of a two-part series of thematic issues on blast-induced Traumatic Brain Injury (bTBI). The includes an of the relevant bounds of the injury threat and a discussion of the outstanding intractable problems in the field of bTBI research, written by guest editors Simon Ouellet (Defence Research and Development Canada Valcartier) and Prof. Oren Petel (�Ӱ�ԭ�� University, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering). The two-part series provides a snapshot of the current state of research in the field of bTBI from an experimental and computational perspective, and includes contributions from a cross-section of international researchers in academic, industrial, and government-funded research institutions.

Congratulations to Jonathan on his hard work. He finalized his thesis titled “An Experimental Investigation of Spall Fracture in Neat Epoxy and an Epoxy/Carbon Nanotube Composite” and has officially completed his MASc in our research group. Look for a forthcoming paper to be published in the International Journal of Impact Engineering early next year, based on his thesis work.

CIHR-NSERC Fund �Ӱ�ԭ��-led International Team Investigating Diagnostic Development for Brain Injury Prevention

An international research team, led by Prof. Oren Petel of �Ӱ�ԭ�� University, has been funded to develop diagnostic tools that can integrate into an improved headform in an effort to improve helmet evaluation and trauma prevention. The team consists of 4 Professors at 3 institutions (Oren Petel, �Ӱ�ԭ�� University; Blaine Hoshizaki, University of Ottawa; Hanspeter Frei, �Ӱ�ԭ�� University; and Patrick Bishop, University of Waterloo), Cadex inc., Defence Research and Development Canada Valcartier, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (U.S. Department of Commerce).

NSERC Funds a New Collaboration with Med-Eng Systems

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration focusing on transparent armour materials between �Ӱ�ԭ�� University and Med-Eng Systems. Professor Oren Petel will lead an effort that will focus on the development of novel polymer nanocomposites based on optimizing polymer failure characteristics.

Congratulations to Jonathan Pepper, a �Ӱ�ԭ�� University graduate student in the Impact Dynamics Research Group, was awarded 1st place in a student poster competition at the 28th Canadian Materials Science Conference in Hamilton, ON. His poster presented experimental work on the spall strengths of Aluminum and Polymethyl Methacrylate.

Congratulations to Chris Comtois-Arnaldo, a �Ӱ�ԭ�� University graduate student in the Impact Dynamics Research Group, was awarded 3rd place in a student poster competition at the 28th Canadian Materials Science Conference in Hamilton, ON. His poster presented experimental research into the strength of particle-doped elastomers and their ballistic response.
