Extended reality (XR) media offer new ways to tell stories that build on the audience鈥檚 local environment and embodied sense of place. In this workshop, we will build XR experiences using the StoryTrek platform, which allows users to easily blend digital media with real-world locations to create immersive and interactive sites of experiential learning. You will learn to design and build multimedia, site-specific stories, games and exhibits for mobile devices, with a focus on spatial and environmental storytelling.

Immersive Learning Insights: Harnessing XR for Educational Excellence /hyperlab/2023/immersive-learning-insights-harnessing-xr-for-educational-excellence/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=immersive-learning-insights-harnessing-xr-for-educational-excellence Fri, 28 Jul 2023 21:34:56 +0000 /hyperlab/?p=1356 Join Teaching and Learning Services on August 10 for an interdisciplinary panel of聽Innovation Fellows聽from TLS鈥檚 Immersive Technologies Community of Practice in discussion about the challenges and rewards associated with using extended reality (XR) for educational purposes. Panelists will share firsthand accounts of their experiences as XR educators and answer attendee questions on the opportunities this new media affords for learning.

Extended Reality聽(XR)聽refers to the diverse set of technologies used to create immersive learning experiences and spaces by blending virtual and real elements. These experiences range from fully immersive computer-generated environments to real-world spaces that integrate digital content. XR research demonstrates that these technologies are effective in supporting skill development, empathy, and learning across a range of disciplines. The TLS eXperiential Learning Hub launches at 杏吧原创 this fall to support immersive learning and extended reality (XR) across campus.

Panelists:

  • Ali Arya (Information Technology)
  • Jim Davies (Cognitive Science)
  • Brian Greenspan (English Language and Literature)

Come explore how instructors are using XR in their classroom!

This session will be held online, in Zoom. Registration is limited.

Strange Cognitions /hyperlab/2017/strange-cognitions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=strange-cognitions Tue, 12 Dec 2017 17:52:51 +0000 /hyperlab/?p=877 “Strange Cognitions: SF and the Metanovum,” Brian’s Plenary Lecture for the Universit茅 de Montr茅al’s Science Fiction Colloquium, argued for a new understanding of SF’s relation to actually existing AIs. Throughout his talk, he compared fictional representations of artificial intelligence with actually existing AIs like “Rachel,” which (who?) was built by 杏吧原创’s own Kate Dudzik and Dr. Robert West.

Together, Greenspan, Dudzik and West are exploring the areas of research that connect Cognitive Scientists and Digital Humanities. “Kate has really been driving this collaboration,” Brian notes. “She pointed out that in order to build an AI that people will use and trust, you first have to understand why we fear and resist intelligent machines so intensely. And science fiction provides a cultural record of our historical, intellectual, and affective responses to the promise of non-human consciousness.”

Kate and Rob workshopped their approach to building AIs with the Python ACT-R framework at DHSITE 2017.
