Professor Susanne M. Klausen<\/a> is giving the keynote lecture at \u201cValuations of Life: Birth Defects, Prenatal Diagnosis, and Disability,\u201d an international workshop held at Uppsala University September 25-26, 2018. The workshop is organized by \u201cMedicine at the Borders of Life,\u201d an interdisciplinary program at Uppsala University that<\/span><\/span> explores controversies and emerging values surrounding the use of fetuses for medical knowledge production, vaccine and pharmaceutical development<\/span>, and in ethical debates related to these themes (ca 1600s-1970s). <\/span>The aim of the workshop is to encourage discussions about values of life in relation to the thalidomide disaster, prenatal diagnostics, and abortion. Klausen\u2019s speech, \u201cContesting Eugenic Abortion: Transnational Feminism, Eugenics and the Legacy of the Thalidomide Tragedy in the Ongoing Struggle for Women\u2019s Reproductive Freedom,\u201d addresses the putative conflict between disability rights and women\u2019s rights in public policy debates about abortion. Klausen\u2019s talk will historicize this tension by examining British feminists\u2019 advocacy of eugenic abortion during the twentieth century.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
