Petrou will start his fellowship in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nieman.harvard.edu\/fellowships\/#faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neiman Fellowship<\/a> selects one Canadian journalist a year to spend two semesters at Harvard University studying an area of their choosing, attending conferences and taking part in academic and professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a dream sabbatical,\u201d said Petrou. \u201cWhile I teach history at 杏吧原创, I suspect I will become a student of history again. It\u2019s a special opportunity.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"michael-petrous-international-reportage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michael Petrou\u2019s International Reportage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrou has reported from across the globe for Canadian and international media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/linkis.com\/nieman.harvard.edu\/a\/0W7H0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As part of the fellowship<\/a>, he will be studying \u201cthe media environment in contested political spaces of eastern Europe and elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His interest in this area was partly informed by his experience reporting from the Ukraine during protests against former president Viktor Yanukovych. At the time, the country was home to rivalling Russian and Western media influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrou recounted how he had heard the same far-fetched, anti-protest story from numerous Ukrainian citizens \u2013 a story he later discovered had originated from Russian-language media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Neiman Fellowship, he looks forward to furthering his research on media in fragile democracies and the democratization of media by new technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December, Petrou was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2016\/12\/14\/carleton-announces-2017-travers-fellowship-recipient-michael-petrou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship<\/a> to report on the Syrian refugee crisis in Middle Eastern countries.
