For more information please contact:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:ErinBaird@cmail.carleton.ca\">ErinBaird@cmail.carleton.ca<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Some questions that may be discussed this evening:<br>\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Why do we need climate activists and refugee advocates talking to each other?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">In what ways are climate refugees similar to or different from other refugees?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">How does climate change intersect with other, more immediate causes of forced migration?\u00a0 (droughts, famines, and fires, but also interstate or civil wars, religious and ethnic violence, etc.?) \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">The UNHCR notes that \u201cMany of those who are displaced across borders as a result of climate change may not meet the refugee definition.\u201d\u00a0 So what changes do we need to see in international law to make sense of climate-induced displacement?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Do Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen have anything in common with regard to climate change?\u00a0 Is the refugee ban also a question of climate (in)justice?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">A common theme of discourses around the &#8216;refugee problem&#8217; is that migration is a band-aid but not a solution: we need to fix the root causes requiring people to move.\u00a0 (Hence the establishment of refugee camps rather than permanent resettlement.)\u00a0 How does the figure of the climate refugee change how we must think about this?\u00a0 Do we need a permanent right of settlement? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">And when extended rights across borders, what of questions of indigenous sovereignty?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">How does climate displacement affect the availability of cheap\/exploitable migrant labour?\u00a0 And how should organized labour respond?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Many resources are being devoted to finding ways to adapt to climate change, whether through GMO crops or seawalls around certain low-lying parts of the world (like Manhattan).\u00a0 Who benefits from these, and who is being left out? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">Who gets to move in the first place?\u00a0 Who won\u2019t have to?<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Join us for an evening of conversation, learning and debate as we explore the relationship between climate change, refugees, and migration in our community and elsewhere.
