Special Students who wish to register should contact the Undergraduate Administrator at <a href=\"mailto:history@carleton.ca\">history@carleton.ca<\/a> to discuss any concerns regarding prerequisites or equivalencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>HIST 3904B: Topics in U.S. History \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/undergraduate\/courses\/3000-level-2\/hist-3904b\/\">Fighting Words: Contemporary Perspectives on the American Civil War<\/a>\u201d (Field c)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: This fall-semester course conflicts with HIST 3810. For those who are interested in both courses, HIST 3810 is also available in the winter semester.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>America. Divided into armed camps. Inflamed by political rhetoric that would&nbsp;make compromise impossible.&nbsp;And, from 1861 to 1865, at war with itself. Explore the words of those who would&nbsp;sunder a nation and those who would transcend those divisions&nbsp;in the&nbsp;battle for a re-united and re-defined nation in HIST3904 Fighting Words: Contemporary Perspectives on the American Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>HIST 3907A: Transnational or Thematic Topic&nbsp;\u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/undergraduate\/courses\/3000-level-2\/hist-3907a-2\/\">Freedom and its Discontents: Blackness and the Adventure of Western Culture<\/a>\u201d (Field e) &#8211; Winter<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous activists, artists and intellectuals have drawn attention to the problems of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We have been informed about the problem of the color line, the problem of difference and, perhaps most intriguingly, the problem of freedom.
