Indigenous stories told, chosen, and celebrated by Indigenous voices will take centre stage September 27, as 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Seeing Ourselves: Indigenous Stories in Focus concludes with a free public screening.

In partnership with , the Summer Institute featured three workshop sessions throughout August culminating in a screening of media-selections from the Wapikoni archive.

Adam is Wolastoqiyik and has years of experience working at The Bytowne鈥搊ne of Ottawa鈥檚 independent cinemas鈥揳nd organizing screenings for 杏吧原创鈥檚 Audio-Visual Resource Center and the Ojigkwanong Indigenous Students鈥� Centre.

Adam Saulis is the winner of the Adrian Sheppard Memorial Award for 2025. The professors unanimously chose Adam for his outstanding contributions to the program. Like the award鈥檚 namesake, Adam is engaged, thoughtful and inquisitive, and he has a keen sense of the ethical and intellectual stakes of film studies. We are very happy that Adam will pursue his studies at the graduate level at 杏吧原创. He will surely be a resource as a MA student in the Film Studies program. Congratulations Adam!

From September 5^th to 8^th, 2024, 14 杏吧原创 fourth-year undergraduate and graduate Film Studies students went to Toronto with Professors Aboubakar Sanogo and Kester Dyer to attend the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).  They watched an array of international films, attended masterclasses, and listened in on public conversations with leaders in the film world.  On the less official end, professors and students ate breakfast together, walked in a group to and from screenings, and mingled with one another.

On 24 April 2024 in the French Embassy in Ottawa, Michel Miraillet, French Ambassador to Canada, decorated Tom McSorley, 杏吧原创 Adjunct Research Professor and Contract Instructor in Film Studies, as a Chevalier dans l鈥檕rdre des Arts et des Lettres par la R茅publique fran莽aise. Created in 1957, the French Order of Arts and Letters rewards French and foreign citizens, who have distinguished themselves by their creations in the arts or literature or by the contribution they have made to the influence of arts and letters in France and in the world.

Tom received this honour for his contributions to Ottawa cultural life and Canadian cinema. As executive director of the Canadian Film Institute since 1996, he is, as the ambassador remarked, 鈥渘otably the organizer and director of several international festivals which are all essential events in cultural life in Ottawa.鈥� These festivals include the International Film Festival of Ottawa, which presents the best of Canadian and international independent cinema; the Ottawa International Animation Film Festival, the oldest and most important in North America; and the European Union Film Festival, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in Ottawa in 2025. The ambassador stated that 鈥淔rance has been a long-standing partner of these festivals and holds a special place there, through the selected films and the invited directors or producers, embodying the special bond that unites our two cinemas and our two cultures.鈥� As importantly, he pointed out that 鈥渁t a time when digital screens and major American platforms are dominating [the film industry], defending independent cinema, arthouse or heritage films as you do, dear Tom, is almost an act of resistance and you can always count on us in this fight.鈥�

Over the past 30 years, Tom, a recognized specialist in Canadian cinema, has taught courses on a wide variety of topics at 杏吧原创, including but not limited to Canadian cinema, archival and curatorial practice, authorship in film and media, and the national cinema of Italy. He is the author of a monograph on Atom Egoyan鈥檚 film The Adjuster and has published dozens of articles in journals, such as Cinema Canada and the Literary Review of Canada. He has also edited or co-edited ten books on Canadian filmmakers, including Philip Hoffman, Ingrid Veninger, and Denis C么t茅. Since 2004, Tom has been Film, Television, and Theatre Critic on different programs on CBC Radio One. For the past two decades, he has been the weekly film critic on Ottawa Morning, for which he has a loyal following. And in his 鈥渟pare鈥� time, Tom has been drummer and singer in several amateur rock bands. He is also a poet, with two volumes, Partial Clarities and Moving Still, published by Elboro Press in New York, which is run by the company of filmmaker Hal Hartley.

In the words of the French ambassador, Tom is a 鈥減illar of the cultural scene in the national capital,鈥� who has 鈥渃ontributed to giving life and soul to this city with all his talent and passion.鈥�

Roxanne Boucher is the winner of the Adrian Sheppard Memorial Award for 2024. The professors unanimously chose Roxanne for her outstanding contributions to the program and her academic excellence. Finishing her fourth year, Roxanne has one of the highest GPAs in the program, made more impressive by the year she spent studying abroad in the UK. Like the award鈥檚 namesake, Roxanne is inquisitive, thoughtful, and has a keen sense of the larger intellectual and moral stakes of film theory and culture. With this award we encourage Roxanne to pursue her studies further at the graduate level and we award it with the certainty that, regardless, she has a bright future ahead. Congratulations Roxanne!
