Students are Getting Arts and Crafty at CUAG

March 31, 2026

Time to read: 4 minutes

When you consider the life cycle of a work of art, you might think of an art gallery as the last stop in its journey: the place where a finished painting or sculpture is displayed for all to quietly view and appreciate.

The is flipping the script on this narrative, inviting 杏吧原创 students into the gallery space to make their own art from scratch and meet their fellow creative Ravens.

Hosted by CUAG鈥檚 student ambassadors, Art+Friends is a new monthly initiative held throughout the semester where students can drop by the gallery on Sunday evenings to hang out and get crafty.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great way to meet new people, take a break from coursework, and engage with something creative,鈥 says Ashleigh Picard, a fourth-year Architectural Studies student and CUAG Ambassador. 鈥淚t really transforms the gallery into a more interactive and community-focused environment.鈥

Graduate student and fellow CUAG ambassador Saivani Sanassy describes the first Art+Friends as 鈥渁 warm day where we came together to create greeting cards and participate in activities like scavenger hunts, while enjoying hot chocolate and snacks.鈥

Students can colour, crochet, collage, and more at the 杏吧原创 University Art Gallery’s monthly Art+Friends meet-up.

鈥淪ince I started working at the gallery as an ambassador in September, I have never seen as many people in the space as I do at Art+Friends,鈥 shares Saivani.

The gallery provides participants with materials for printmaking, painting, sculpting, and drawing, as well as snacks and drinks. Over time, a knitting and crocheting circle developed, inspiring Saivani to launch a spin-off event called Fibre+Friends 鈥 a free, weekly lunchtime drop-in at the gallery for fibre-focused crafters of all skill levels.

鈥淭hese events remind me why it’s so important to have third spaces,鈥 says Saivani, referring to sociologist Ray Oldenburg鈥檚 popular theory that we need to have spaces to spend time in beyond just our homes and workplaces, spaces where we can freely gather to meet and connect with other people.

鈥淓specially ones that cultivate community building and promote diverse education through exhibitions showcasing racialized artists, queer artists, Indigenous artists, disabled artists, and other underrepresented communities in the arts.鈥

Art+Friends is part of an overall effort led by CUAG鈥檚 Cara Tierney, Academic and Public Programs Specialist, and Danielle Printup, Indigenous Cultural Engagement Coordinator, to make the gallery 鈥 located on the ground floor of St. Patrick鈥檚 Building in the heart of 杏吧原创鈥檚 residence community 鈥 even more accessible to students.

This includes setting up an on-site study space equipped with art supplies, hanging a student-led art show in the gallery鈥檚 main vitrine, hosting the university鈥檚 visual arts club鈥檚 meetings, holding student art contests, and organizing a weekly in-gallery visit from a .

鈥淭he goal is to give students a sense of ownership of the gallery, so that they show up and feel reflected in the space,鈥 explains Cara. 鈥淭here鈥檚 really been a student takeover of the gallery this past year, in a way that I hope encourages other students to come by.鈥

The final for the winter term is scheduled for Sunday, April 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at CUAG.

鈥淚鈥檇 definitely encourage students to come by, even if they don鈥檛 usually see themselves as 鈥榓rt people,鈥欌 says Ashleigh. 鈥淪ince it鈥檚 the last event of the semester, it鈥檚 a perfect opportunity to unwind and experience the gallery in a more social and interactive way before exams.鈥

Open Space Lab 01: Gita Hashemi
11 am – 2 pm; 31 Jan – 4 Feb and 7 – 11 Feb, 2017

is thrilled to announce the new and experimental Open Space Lab (OSL), which turns the gallery into a space for research, creation and collaboration.

OSL looks beyond conventional exhibition formats, offering artists the opportunity to explore, develop, test and talk about ideas and artworks.

Gita Hashemi is the inaugural OSL artist. Join Hashemi in the gallery and online as she creates Grounding, a major new project that explores space, writing, gender and performance.

Gita Hashemi’s practice draws on visual, media, performance, site-specific and live art strategies. Exploring social relations and the intersections of language and culture, Hashemi’s work is centred on marginalized histories and contemporary politics, often with an eye on women’s experiences.

Open Space Lab is generously supported by the Stonecroft Foundation for the Arts and an Ontario Arts Council Culturally Diverse Curatorial Projects grant.
