{"id":656,"date":"2021-03-29T13:53:01","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T17:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/?p=656"},"modified":"2021-03-29T13:59:51","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T17:59:51","slug":"2020-paper-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/2021\/2020-paper-round-up\/","title":{"rendered":"2020 Paper Round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2020 we published 9 papers on habitat loss and fragmentation, sustainable farmlands, and road ecology.<\/p>\n<p>On habitat loss and fragmentation, we updated the old &#8220;single small or several large&#8221; SLOSS debate (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fahrig2020GEB.pdf\">Fahrig 2020<\/a>), showing that several small patches hold more species than few large ones. We found support for the Habitat Amount Hypothesis (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Watlingetal2020EcolLett.pdf\">Watling et al. 2020<\/a>). And we showed that habitat loss and disturbance interact to affect forests (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Llorenetal2020JournalofEcology.pdf\">Lloren et al. 2020<\/a>). We also put forward a landscape design with lots of small forest bits, for biodiversity conservation in populated regions (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arroyo-Rodriguezetal2020EcolLet.pdf\">Arroyo-Rodriguez et al. 2020<\/a>). And we critiqued recent sweeping changes that have weakened Ontario&#8217;s Endangered Species Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bergmanetal2020FACETS.pdf\">Bergman et al. 2020<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-661\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arroyo-Rodrigues-et-al-ideal-landscape-240x183.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arroyo-Rodrigues-et-al-ideal-landscape-240x183.gif 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arroyo-Rodrigues-et-al-ideal-landscape-160x122.gif 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For sustainable farmlands we showed large benefits of smaller fields for plant diversity (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Alignieretal2020JApplEcol.pdf\">Alignier et al. 2020<\/a>). We showed that farmland heterogeneity affects biodiversity as much as reducing intense practices like pesticides (<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fahriglab\/wp-content\/uploads\/Martinetal2020AgricEcosysEnviron.pdf\">Martin et al. 2020<\/a>).
