Presenting the 2014 EU-Canada Young Journalist Award<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The European Union Delegation to Canada is pleased to announce the <\/strong>2014 edition of the European Union-Canada Young Journalist Award<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU-Canada Young Journalist Award (YJA) was created to recognize outstanding journalistic potential among Canadian students. Since 2001, three students are selected every year to participate in a week-long study tour of various EU institutions and the Canadian Mission to the EU in Brussels. Winners will also have the chance to attend a Midday EU press briefing. Prior to the trip, which is paid for by the European Union, winners will be invited to an awards ceremony in Ottawa on 9 May Europe Day, an event attended by ministers, the diplomatic corps and journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The YJA is open to students in all Canadian universities and higher education establishments. Applicants are invited to make a submission focusing on current issues facing the European Union or EU-Canada relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The YJA aims to reinforce links between the people of the European Union and Canada and to raise awareness of the European Union among a new generation of Canadian students and journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eligibility:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to be eligible, students must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Actively enrolled in a Canadian university or a post-secondary institution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Between the ages 18-30<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Canadian citizen or permanent resident<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to apply:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applicants are invited to make a submission, in English or French, focusing on a current issue facing the European Union or European Union-Canada relations. In terms of format, the work may be either written (a news story or opinion piece of maximum 1,000 words) or audiovisual (a report of up to 90 seconds duration).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students are encouraged to prepare their entries as if they were intended to be published in Canada in a newspaper or magazine or broadcast on TV or radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submissions should be prepared with a Canadian audience in mind. The jury will pay particular attention to journalistic qualities and potential, including rigorous research and factual accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing date for applications is Friday, 31 January 2014<\/strong> (postmark). In addition to the above-mentioned submission, applications must comprise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.      The student’s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 (curriculum vitae)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.      A letter of motivation clearly outlining the reasons for applying and the anticipated benefits to be derived from participation in the study trip, with particular reference to the student’s future career objectives<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.      Official administrative document issued by the university or institution verifying student status and enrolment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.      Letter of reference<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.      Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note that incomplete applications, i.e. applications not containing the submission accompanied by ALL FIVE of the above documents submitted at the same time, will not be considered.<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final selection by the Jury:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jury will meet in February 2014 to select the best pieces received by the closing date. The jury will consist of five members. Two jurors will be Canadian journalists, or other Canadians active in media circles. One juror will be a Canadian academic with expertise in the field of journalism or European Union studies. The other two jurors will be representatives of EU missions in Ottawa. The decisions of the Jury will be final. The three winners will be notified directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners are required to chronicle their Study Tour online (i.e. blogging, social media).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ottawa – La D\u00e9l\u00e9gation de L’Union europ\u00e9enne au Canada est heureuse d’annoncer le lancement du Prix UE-Canada pour jeunes journalistes 2014.<\/strong> <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 dans le but de reconna\u00eetre la contribution exceptionnelle et le potentiel journalistique parmi les \u00e9tudiants canadiens. Chaque ann\u00e9e depuis 2001, trois \u00e9tudiants sont s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s pour participer \u00e0 un voyage d’\u00e9tude d’une semaine et conna\u00eetre les diff\u00e9rentes institutions europ\u00e9ennes ainsi que la Mission du Canada aupr\u00e8s de l’UE. Les gagnants auront \u00e9galement l’opportunit\u00e9 d’assister \u00e0 un point de presse. Avant le voyage, qui est pay\u00e9 par l’Union europ\u00e9enne, les gagnants sont invit\u00e9s \u00e0 une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise de prix le 9 mai \u2013 La Journ\u00e9e de L’Europe – \u00e0 Ottawa. Des repr\u00e9sentants du gouvernement et du corps diplomatique ainsi que des journalistes participent aussi \u00e0 cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Prix s’adresse aux \u00e9tudiants dans toutes les universit\u00e9s canadiennes et les \u00e9tablissements d’enseignement sup\u00e9rieur. Les candidats sont invit\u00e9s \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter des soumissions sur un sujet d’actualit\u00e9 qui concerne l’Union europ\u00e9enne ou les relations UE-Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le concours vise \u00e0 renforcer les liens entre l’Union europ\u00e9enne et le Canada et \u00e0 promouvoir la sensibilisation d’une nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d’\u00e9tudiants canadiens et des journalistes aupr\u00e8s de l’Union europ\u00e9enne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour \u00eatre \u00e9ligibles, les \u00e9tudiants doivent \u00eatre:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         inscrit(e)s dans une institution de hautes \u00e9tudes canadienne<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comment poser sa candidature?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiant(e)s qui r\u00e9pondent aux crit\u00e8res d’\u00e9ligibilit\u00e9 sont invit\u00e9(e)s \u00e0 soumettre une composition journalistique individuelle traitant d’une question d’actualit\u00e9 sur l’Union europ\u00e9enne ou les relations UE-Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En ce qui concerne le format, il peut s’agir d’une composition \u00e9crite (jusqu’\u00e0 1,000 mots pour un article d’actualit\u00e9 ou opinion) ou audiovisuelle (soit un reportage d’une dur\u00e9e allant jusqu’\u00e0 90 secondes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiant(e)s sont invit\u00e9(e)s \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer leur composition comme si elle devait \u00eatre publi\u00e9e au Canada dans un journal ou un magazine ou pass\u00e9e \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision ou \u00e0 la radio. Elles doivent \u00eatre r\u00e9dig\u00e9es de telle sorte qu’elle puisse int\u00e9resser des lecteurs ou des spectateurs canadiens. Le Jury portera une attention toute particuli\u00e8re aux qualit\u00e9s et potentiel journalistiques qui d\u00e9montrent une recherche rigoureuse et l’exactitude des faits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La date limite pour la soumission de candidature est vendredi, le 31 janvier 2014<\/strong> (le cachet de la poste faisant foi). En plus des compositions susmentionn\u00e9es en anglais ou en fran\u00e7ais, les dossiers doivent inclure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.      Le r\u00e9sum\u00e9 des \u00e9tudiant(e)s (curriculum vitae)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.      Une lettre de motivation qui explique en d\u00e9tail les raisons pour lesquelles il\/elle a pos\u00e9 sa candidature et comment il\/elle envisage les retomb\u00e9es b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques de sa participation \u00e0 cette comp\u00e9tition pour sa future carri\u00e8re<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.      Un document administratif officiel de l’universit\u00e9 attestant de son statut d’\u00e9tudiant ainsi que de son inscription<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.      Une lettre de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.      Une preuve de nationalit\u00e9 ou de statut de r\u00e9sident permanent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le jury se r\u00e9unira en f\u00e9vrier 2014 afin d’identifier les meilleures compositions soumises avant la date de cl\u00f4ture. Il sera compos\u00e9 de cinq membres dont deux journalistes Canadiens ou de toute autre profession du domaine des m\u00e9dias, auxquels s’ajoutera un universitaire canadien sp\u00e9cialiste en journalisme ou en \u00e9tudes sur l’Union europ\u00e9enne. Les deux derniers membres seront des repr\u00e9sentants des missions diplomatiques de l’UE \u00e0 Ottawa. Les d\u00e9cisions du jury seront finales. Les trois gagnants seront contact\u00e9s directement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les gagnants devront chroniquer leur voyage d’\u00e9tudes en ligne (i.e. blogue, r\u00e9seaux sociaux).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
