Joining the EPTL as an undergraduate research assistant proved to be an excellent opportunity to develop problem solving skills due to the unforeseen issues that can happen in the lab. Working with the EPTL was also a great opportunity to learn how to communicate and coordinate with a team. Additionally, working in the lab allowed me to get hands-on experience and apply some of the concepts that I have learned during my undergrad so far.

My work consisted of implementing the Method of Moments with Interpolative Closure (MOMIC) to track soot particle morphology formed during inception, surface growth, and coagulation. This experience allowed me to delve into the fascinating world of nanostructured particles and gain a deep understanding of soot formation and evolution. The time spent at EPTL also culminated in an array of technical skills – not only did I hone my programming, mathematical, and research skills but also my ability to write technical reports and deliver technical presentations greatly improved. I highly recommend students to join EPTL if they want to make the most out of their STEM careers and gain invaluable experience from a team of smart people.

Working at the EPTL with Professor Kholghy was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to work on a joint project with the NRC on their campus, and the learnings I gained are invaluable. I developed skills in a large variety of areas, which included hands on research and laboratory skills, and operating a Flame Spray Pyrolysis Reactor with the Black Carbon Metrology Group of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa. I also learned how to create clear and precise engineering reports and presentations throughout my work-term. The experience working with ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´â€™s EPTL will go a long way in both my studies, and future work opportunities. I would highly recommend the EPTL to anyone wishing to learn and develop skills, within a smart and supportive community.

During summer 2022, I had the pleasure of being a part of the Energy and Particle Technology Laboratory at ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University. My work consisted of soot modeling in counterflow diffusion flames and shock tubes. I researched papers where I could learn about the soot and see the importance of this project to real life applications. The soot modeling was interesting to see the utilizations of the code and being able to see how reactors could be replicated by code. I did however have some troubleshooting problems. This allowed me to figure out how to deal with this problem and learn from it for future problems. The results collected from the model were organized into excel spreadsheets. These results were compared to experimental results discussed in some of the papers that I researched. There were weekly seminars which presented me the opportunity to get insight on others projects and the possibility that their work could help assist with my project. This summer was a great opportunity for me where I got to work with many amazing people. I have learned various new things at EPTL and would recommend undergraduate students to join this experience.
