The EBB lab goes to Goldschmidt 2026!

Several EBB lab members presented their exciting research at the Goldschmidt Conference in Montreal this Summer. Topics ranged from studies on critical metal cycling in model organisms, the metabolism of halogenated pollutants by microbes in landfills, and the study of biomarkers for carbon cycling in oil sands. Funding from the Joint Genome Institute to study rare earth element biology

Dr. Grégoire is one of seventeen researchers supported by the Joint Genome Institute to study novel mechanisms for rare earth element metabolism in bacteria. This research combines RNA sequencing and metabolomics to characterize how redox potential controls metabolic pathways that rely on these critical metals. EBB lab funded by ECCC to study plastics in wetlands

Dr. Allyson Brady (PI) and Dr. Daniel Grégoire (co-PI) were awarded joint funding from NSERC and ECCC to study how microbes control the fate of microplastics in wetlands. This work is being carried out with Dr. Jennifer Provencher from ECCC to advance sustainable strategies for managing plastic pollution in Canada. For the full announcement, click .

EBB lab members Libby Ketchum, Avry Janzen, Quinn Carkner, and Danielle Jenkins presented the hard work they completed for their BIOL 4908 research projects at a busy poster day! Topics ranged from how microbes could be used to recover critical metals, biomarkers to study microbial carbon cycling in contaminated habitats, and analytical techniques to monitor PFAS transformations by gut microbes. NFRF funding to study microbial solutions to forever chemicals

Dr. Amy Rand and Dr. Daniel Grégoire successfully obtained funding to couple analytical chemistry and whole-community sequencing techniques to study microbial pathways involved in PFAS transformations. The Environmental Biogeochemistry and Biotechnology lab has officially opened its doors at �Ӱ�ԭ��! We are actively recruiting undergraduate and graduate students to launch our research program that will expand the known biodiversity of microbes living in contaminated habitats.
