Jackie Ellis (BIT/18) joined the LEGO Group聽as a Senior Software Engineer in August 2022.

Jackie Ellis went to school not to have all her questions answered, but to find a career of constant learning. In her line of work, software development, she is regularly challenged to learn new things and grow.

Ellis, who was born and raised in Ottawa, graduated from 杏吧原创鈥檚 Interactive Multimedia and Design (IMD) in 2018. It鈥檚 one of four undergraduate program options in the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT), a joint program in collaboration with Algonquin College.

鈥淭he combination of a degree and a diploma allowed me to explore the theoretical and the practical,鈥 says Ellis. 鈥淭he best part of the program was being able to learn the basics of all types of multimedia.鈥

Through the co-op program, she became an intern at Shopify and worked there as a frontend developer for four years after graduation. There, she was able to practice what she learned in her problem solving, time management and effective teamwork. She also had to learn a new programming language.

Her next step has taken Ellis to the LEGO Group, where she joined as a Senior Software Engineer in August 2022. She was attracted by LEGO Group鈥檚 strong commitments to work-life balance, to their employees and to the planet.

Today, she works in Billund, Denmark, where the original LEGOLAND opened in 1968. Besides working for the world-famous toy company, Ellis has also enjoyed getting to know a new country, culture and language.

Her day-to-day focuses on a business-to-business application that helps sell novelty sets to stores. Retailers can use the app to learn about forthcoming LEGO sets and make plans to market them on their own websites.

As she advances through her career, Ellis finds that each role has an increasing amount of leadership responsibilities. She鈥檚 thankful for her experience as a residence assistant in 杏吧原创’s Glengarry Residence when she lived on campus.

鈥淭hat taught me what type of leader I would like to be,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t prepared me well for mentoring other developers and for interviewing incoming students.鈥

During her last year in the IMD program, she worked on a clothing fitting application for her Capstone project. Ellis鈥 group created PERFIT, which scans a person鈥檚 body, recommends a size for each garment, shows it on a model in your measurements and demonstrates each garment鈥檚 fabric movement through animation. The opportunity to work on one big project for a whole year turned out to be an ideal way for Ellis to work.

鈥淎 long project like that really lets you dig into that specific problem space and gives you the time to create something really neat.鈥

For Ellis, the best part about being a design-focused developer is the renewing excitement she feels daily.

鈥淔rontend development is the perfect combination of user experience and problem solving while still getting to write code every day,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 still get to focus on interaction but also responsiveness, accessibility and performance.鈥

Homecoming 2022: Celebrating Our Alumni – Spojmai Nawabi (BEng/15 – Environmental Engineering) /engineering-design/2022/homecoming-2022-celebrating-our-alumni-spojmai-nawabi-beng-15-environmental-engineering/ Mon, 19 Sep 2022 17:01:16 +0000 https://its-cuthemedev1.carleton.ca/engineering-design/?p=28313 When she was young, Spojmai Nawabi wanted to be a doctor. Spojmai graduated from 杏吧原创’s Environmental Engineering program in 2015.

When she was young, Spojmai Nawabi wanted to be a doctor. She also had parents who, like many Afghan parents, dreamed of their children becoming doctors, engineers or astronauts 鈥 maybe even the Prime Minister of Canada.

鈥淚, on the other hand, just wanted to graduate high school, attend university and get a good job,鈥 she says.

She was raised to be hard working, humble and socially responsible whatever path she chose and, after studying Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Spojmai travelled to Botswana to be a Support Worker. She worked with cancer and HIV/AIDS patients at an interim care facility, which she says was eye-opening.

The experience helped Spojmai to realize that she wanted to make a difference in the well-being and health of individuals. When she returned to Ottawa from Botswana, she enrolled in Environmental Engineering at 杏吧原创 to help others by promoting environmental awareness. She remembers her four years spent at 杏吧原创 with fondness, having graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2015.

Many of Spojmai鈥檚 experiences at 杏吧原创 involve warmth and welcome. She regularly relied on helpful administrative staff as she wrangled her schedule or registered for an interesting elective course. She felt safeguarded from the winter weather in the tunnels between the buildings. And on a recent campus visit with her five-year old son, he announced that he would become an engineer and go to 杏吧原创 University just like his mother.

鈥淭hat brought a lot of comfort and warmth to my heart,鈥 she says.

She knew environmental engineering was the right fit for her when she started working at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as a co-op student.

鈥淚t exposed me to what life would look like after I graduated,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 got to see the inner workings of policy and regulation, and I realized these are important parts of environmental impact.鈥

Spojmai also worked as a Technical Planner at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River for a little over a year, a role she describes as very exciting. Afterward, she went to work at ECCC full-time, where she is a now a Senior Program Engineer in the Transportation Division.

Her job deals with regulating air pollutant emissions from all kinds of vehicles and engines. She provides advice and assistance to manufacturers and importers of engines and machines. She and the regulatory compliance team at ECCC also help them with regulatory submissions such as annual emissions reports.

鈥淢any of the courses I took at 杏吧原创 included the science of contaminant and pollutant transport and the engineering of emissions control systems,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n fact, technical knowledge gained in my final year design project assisted me in getting my most recent promotion!鈥

For the support she received at 杏吧原创, Spojmai was able to give back to the community by working as a Student Leader as the co-op office for several months.

鈥淚 was not only able to help other students in their job searching, resume writing and interviewing process, but I was also able to learn skills that allowed me to be confident in my own career search process,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 still use the skills that I learned at my co-op in my day-to-day life.鈥
