�Ӱ�ԭ�� University’s Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) has moved up two spots to No. 10 in Canada in the . FED’s electronics engineering profile ranked No. 4 in Canada, and for the first time, our civil engineering profile was ranked No. 9 nationally.

The U.S. News & World Report, a U.S.-based media company known for education analysis and global rankings, placed �Ӱ�ԭ��’s Faculty of Engineering and Design in the top 30 per cent of engineering schools worldwide. The rankings are based solely on academic research performance and international reputation.

Electronic computer chips power the phone in your pocket and the laptop on your desk. They manipulate electricity to transmit information, and are at the heart of a revolution in computing that has transformed virtually every aspect of daily life. But the computer chips of the future could be even more capable more than the ones use on today. Photonic computer chips transmit information using photons—particles of light—and are up to a thousand times faster than electronic chips. Photonic chips are more energy-efficient and can transmit data over longer distances without degradation in quality. But they are also pretty difficult to make—and to make work.

Architecture Students Helped a South African Village Rebuild After Fire

Nearly five years after visiting South Africa as students, a group of �Ӱ�ԭ�� University architecture alumni have learned that their efforts to help a historic village devasted by fire have come to fruition.

“For me, it’s the reason I went into architecture, in the hopes of doing something that will make a difference to people and communities who really need and deserve it,” says Gabrielle Argent, an Ottawa-based intern architect.

Elsie MacGill’s story is etched into the fabric of Canada’s engineering history. In 1927, MacGill became the first Canadian woman to receive an engineering degree and in 1929, she became the first aeronautical engineer in the world. Since then, thousands upon thousands of other women have become engineers and shaped what the profession is today.
