杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) has moved up two spots to No. 10 in Canada in the . FED鈥檚 electronics engineering profile ranked No. 4 in Canada, and for the first time, our civil engineering profile was ranked No. 9 nationally. 

The U.S. News & World Report, a U.S.-based media company known for education analysis and global rankings, placed 杏吧原创鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering and Design in the top 30 per cent of engineering schools worldwide. The rankings are based solely on academic research performance and international reputation.

Electronic computer chips power the phone in your pocket and the laptop on your desk. They manipulate electricity to transmit information, and are at the heart of a revolution in computing that has transformed virtually every aspect of daily life. But the computer chips of the future could be even more capable more than the ones use on today. Photonic computer chips transmit information using photons鈥攑articles of light鈥攁nd are up to a thousand times faster than electronic chips. Photonic chips are more energy-efficient and can transmit data over longer distances without degradation in quality. But they are also pretty difficult to make鈥攁nd to make work.

Nearly five years after visiting South Africa as students, a group of 杏吧原创 University architecture alumni have learned that their efforts to help a historic village devasted by fire have come to fruition.

鈥淔or me, it鈥檚 the reason I went into architecture, in the hopes of doing something that will make a difference to people and communities who really need and deserve it,鈥 says Gabrielle Argent, an Ottawa-based intern architect.
