Creating Vibrant Public Space: How Architecture Builds Community

Over the past few decades, the prevalence of free, accessible public spaces has been declining in cities around the world. Neither home nor work, these gathering places, such as parks and libraries, bring people from different backgrounds together to socialize and feel a sense a community. Factors contributing to this decline include the increasing cost and privatization of urban land, as well as the shift toward a more individualistic, fast-paced world with more digital interaction. When these places disappear, the social connections that hold cities together can weaken.

ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´â€™s First UNESCO Chair Puts People and Communities at the Centre of Heritage Conservation

Mario Santana Quintero has seen this first-hand. A researcher in ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Santana has worked on cultural heritage conservation globally. One lesson remains; technology alone can’t save heritage, it needs people, trust and collaboration.

From Blocks to Blueprints: How a ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Engineering Grad is Shaping Cities with Minecraft

Matt Holmes isn’t your typical engineering grad. After earning a degree from ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University’s  program, he became an airport planner at Vancouver International Airport and a YouTube sensation.

Through his channel, , Holmes has built a global following teaching realistic city design using Minecraft — inspiring future architects and engineers one block at a time.

Holmes credits ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ for giving him the tools to turn a childhood curiosity into a thriving creative career. The university’s distinctive engineering program — and the opportunities it offered — gave him the knowledge, experience and confidence to transform his interest in building virtual cities into real-world impact.
