�Ӱ�ԭ�� PhD Grad Blasts Off With Space Robotics and AI Research

With the invention of the Canadarm, Canada has been at the forefront of space robotics since the early 1980s. This iconic 50 foot arm supported US space shuttle missions for 30 years and was built to deploy, manoeuvre, and capture payloads.

Almost a decade after its final flight, recent �Ӱ�ԭ�� PhD grad Collins Ogundipe jumped on this Canadian legacy with the goal of pushing the field even further. Funded by the European Space Agency, he engaged in cutting-edge machine learning research designed to enhance the capabilities and efficiency of space robotic manipulators.

After retiring from �Ӱ�ԭ�� in 1999 with an illustrious 31-year career, Dr. J.Y. Wong continues contributing to the university.

“During those years, I received excellent support from the university administration, at all levels, in research and teaching,” explains the professor emeritus and adjunct research professor. “I thought that in return, it is time for me to contribute as much as I can to �Ӱ�ԭ�� in the form of donations to establish undergraduate and graduate scholarships, and research and teaching facilities.”

Prof. Steve Ulrich Named Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Professor Steve Ulrich of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has been named an Associate Fellow by the for his “original contributions to the area of guidance, navigation, and control systems for spacecraft formation flying, proximity operations, and space robotics.”

The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals “who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.”

Among the 130 newly elected AIAA Associate Fellows that make up the Class of 2024, Professor Ulrich is one of only two recipients from Canadian institutions.

“This distinguished group of professionals has made significant and lasting contributions to the aerospace profession,” said AIAA President Laura McGill. “They exemplify expertise and dedication to excellence in advancing their specific technical disciplines. They are truly shaping the future of aerospace and we are proud of their achievements.”

“The AIAA Associate Fellows personify the innovation that drives our industry forward,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “The members of the Class of 2024 Associate Fellows embody the ingenuity and commitment that are crucial for developing solutions to the complex questions raised across the aerospace community”

Professor Ulrich also serves as the Director of �Ӱ�ԭ��’s Spacecraft Robotics and Control Laboratory. He will be formally honoured among the Class of 2024 during the in January.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the world’s largest aerospace technical society. With nearly 30,000 individual members from 91 countries, and 100 corporate members, AIAA brings together industry, academia, and government to advance engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense.
