ELITE Program for Black Youth

杏吧原创 University is partnering with University of Alberta on the . The program creates opportunities for Black Youth to access experiential learning and work integrated training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and entrepreneurship. Interns are involved in projects with internship hosts such as university researchers, for-profit industry companies, and government agencies. The internship hosts are experienced professionals or companies with the necessary qualifications and expertise to train young people and provide them with the necessary technical support and coaching. Through the ELITE Program for Black Youth, interns will acquire marketable technical skills and build a professional network for future employment prospects.

Internships which are fulltime and 12 to 16 weeks in duration may qualify as eligible co-op work terms.

Expanded ICTC/杏吧原创 University Partnership Strengthens Career Opportunities for Students

Students enrolled in the now benefit from an expanded work-integrated learning partnership between the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Co-operative Education.

Building on ICTC鈥檚 initial collaboration with 杏吧原创 University, which focused on creating co-operative education opportunities in the artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicle sectors, the expanded program will now help create job opportunities for students across all faculties and sectors through ICTC鈥檚

Allicia Draper, Talent Acquisition, People and Culture at Ciena Corporation鈥攁n American telecommunications networking equipment and software services supplier that hired 杏吧原创 students through WIL Digital鈥攕ays the expanded partnership now affords the company a wider scope of placements, resulting in direct business growth. 鈥淚t has allowed us to increase the number of students we hire and, in some cases, even extend students into full-time and permanent positions,鈥 she says. 鈥淸WIL Digital] has also been a great tool for managers and students to reflect on and evaluate student tasks, the skills they are acquiring, and their overall performance during their time at Ciena. It鈥檚 a wonderful tool that allows us to track progress and hire more frequently.鈥

From the academic perspective, 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Courtney R茅gimbald, Director, Career Development and Co-operative Education, says that WIL Digital provides students 鈥渟olid employability skills and competencies.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 so pleased that 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Co-operative Education department is able to ramp up our strong partnership with ICTC. Given the sustained growth in the tech industry, our partnership is essential for bringing exciting and progressive experiential learning opportunities to our talented co-op students in the Ottawa region,鈥 R茅gimbald says.

杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Co-operative Education program is the third largest co-op program in Ontario and has been supporting employers and organizations worldwide for over 30 years. 杏吧原创 has talented students from over 149 degree programs and academic streams available for work year-round.

ICTC鈥檚 WIL Digital has been working with academic institutions and industry during the pandemic to help students launch their careers in the growing technology sectors, which have weathered the economic storm better than other sectors.

Over four years, WIL Digital will create over 7,000 high-quality work experiences for students across Canada, preparing today鈥檚 students for tomorrow鈥檚 jobs.

8 Wing Environment鈥檚 Contaminated Sites Manager, Mr. Chris McRae, is shown on the left with Defence Construction Canada鈥檚 Summer Student, Ms. Claire Woodfield (Honours Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental), 杏吧原创 University) on the right, conducting surface water quality sampling along the flooded Bay of Quinte shoreline on 8 Wing/CFB Trenton鈥檚 Federal Lands. DND/8 Wing Environmental Management provides contaminated sites management under the Government of Canada鈥檚 Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan. Demonstrations of scientific field sampling techniques and methodologies, while using proper personal protective equipment, are great learning experiences for field scientists and engineers. The results of the water samples will help us to better understand the general chemistry and composition of our shoreline and waters.
