  {"id":50470,"date":"2025-06-20T13:02:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T17:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/economics\/?page_id=50470"},"modified":"2025-06-20T13:52:47","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T17:52:47","slug":"lynda-khalaf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/economics\/lynda-khalaf\/","title":{"rendered":"Lynda Khalaf"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n            <div class=\"cu-textmedia flex flex-col lg:flex-row mx-auto gap-6 md:gap-10 my-6 md:my-12 first:mt-0 max-w-5xl\">\n        <div class=\"justify-start cu-textmedia-content cu-prose-first-last\" style=\"flex: 0 0 100%;\">\n            <header class=\"font-light prose-xl cu-pageheader md:prose-2xl cu-component-updated cu-prose-first-last\">\n                                    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] pb-5 after:w-10 text-cu-black-700 not-prose\">\n                        Lynda Khalaf\n                    <\/h1>\n                \n                                \n                                    \n\n<p>Research and Awards<\/p>\n\n\n                            <\/header>\n\n                    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019 SSHRC Insight Grant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Simulation-Based Inference on Measures of Financial Risk<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 2008 recession, a number of studies questioned the ability of inference on risk premiums in equilibrium-based asset pricing models and statistical tail risk assessments to be reliable tools for efficient capital allocation and policy analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SSHRC has awarded $289,000 to Professor Khalaf to assess these frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCritiques underscore various pitfalls pertaining to statistical identification, assumptions on subsidiary although consequential effects, handling of big data and parameter stability,\u201d explained Khalaf. \u201cMotivated by these concerns, we seek to develop and implement improved tools that are informed by and will contribute to ongoing advances in econometrics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with Jean-Marie Dufour (McGill University) and Marie-Claude Beaulieu (Universit\u00e9 Laval), Khalaf will consider \u201casset pricing factor models including Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) motivated cross-sectional conditional and unconditional regressions, which imply that expected excess returns are determined solely and linearly by loadings on risk factors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second research stream \u201cfocuses on risk assessment techniques, which include defining, estimating and back-testing risk measures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019 NSERC Discovery Grant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Simulation-Based Multiple Inference Problems: Theory and Application<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Khalaf has been awarded a Discovery Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for research that proposes a new methodology to measuring income inequality over time. She is the first faculty member in the Faculty of Public Affairs to receive an NSERC grant. Her project will receive $20,000 per year over a five-year period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her application, Professor Khalaf references research on inequality by Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets and more recently, economist Thomas Piketty that have \u201cshaken the discipline worldwide.\u201d Her research \u201caims to develop and validate concrete statistical tools towards evidence-based inequality analysis, building on the fact that inequality measures are multi-dimensional\u2014both conceptually and definitionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher Worswick, Associate Dean (Research and International) for the Faculty of Public Affairs, says the project will offer a step forward in the analysis of income distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMany people are concerned that income inequality is worsening.
