Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Development of Technologies and Equipment Related to Flow Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the development of technologies and equipment related to flow chemistry. The anticipated start date will be as soon as possible, with a duration of 2 years. This is a joint position between ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University (Prof. Jeff Manthorpe), the University of Ottawa (Prof. Michael G. Organ) and Total Synthesis Ltd., Ottawa, Canada.

Department Background Information

The Department of Chemistry at ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University, located in Ottawa, Canada, is a comprehensive university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Research in the department is grouped into four themes: molecules and materials for sustainability; human and ecosystem health; food safety, security, and analytical methods; and machine learning and big data as tools for chemistry research. The interdisciplinary nature of the department’s research continues a long tradition of local, national, and international collaboration with the private sector, government and other academic institutions.

Research Project Overview

Prof. Manthorpe and Prof. Organ in collaboration with Total Synthesis Ltd. of Canada, a leading flow technology company for Continuous Manufacturing of high-value commodities, are seeking a postdoctoral fellow with demonstrable experience in process analysis, process integration, and process automation. The selected candidate will have an opportunity to work in a highly trained multidisciplinary team, and further his/her skills in an inclusive environment for a number of currently trending sectors, including Flow Chemistry, process analytical technology (PAT), automation and continued process verification (CPV).

Salary

The postdoctoral fellow will be offered a salary of $60,000 per annum, with the additional ability to opt into an extended health and dental benefit plan. The postdoc will be considered unionized and will be a member of PSAC Local 77000. Information on this bargaining unit can be found here: .

Position Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this position will, under the direction of Prof. Jeff Manthorpe, be responsible for leading the research activities of the project, including but not limited to the following core responsibilities:

Job Requirements

  • PhD degree in science or engineering from a recognized university; you must have received your degree after May 2023. This is the minimum qualification for the position
  • Demonstrable experience on instruments pertaining to process chemistry and analysis
  • Deep knowledge of online and/or offline analysis
  • Understanding of process chemistry
  • Ability to apply past and present knowledge in short-term actions in light of long-term objectives
  • Ability to follow safety protocols
  • Ability to organize and demonstrate effective time management and prioritization
  • Ability to clearly communicate your results and interpretations
  • Ability to write clear, concise and coherent technical reports
  • A positive outlook and growth-oriented focus
  • Fluency in English
  • Clean record for government security clearance

Assets

  • Knowledge of Flow Chemistry
  • Knowledge of PAT
  • Experience working with and troubleshooting mechatronic equipment (e.g., pumps, valves, analytics)
  • Critical thinking: Analytical, detail-oriented, and problem-solving

ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ and PSAC 77000 Ratify New Collective Agreement

To all members of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ community,

We are pleased to announce that ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University and PSAC 77000 have ratified a new collective agreement. PSAC 77000 represents more than 100 postdoctoral fellows who are actively engaged in research activities in a range of disciplines across campus. The new collective agreement is retroactive to May 1, 2022 and will be in place until April 30, 2025.

The agreement provides one percent per annum across-the-board salary increases in line with Bill 124. Some additional highlights of the agreement include:

  • Expanded Professional Development Fund
  • Provision for religious observance leave
  • Creation of a postdoctoral fellow award
  • Expanded criteria for psychological therapy services

We would like to thank all members of the bargaining teams for their hard work and leadership during the bargaining process.
