The听Canada 150: Asian Canadians in Visual Culture听project is proud to present听Rethinking Canada 150: Networks and Nodes in Asian Canadian Visual Culture, the final meeting in a series of workshops and conferences in New York, Montreal, and Ottawa that examine Asian Canadians in visual culture 鈥� their presence, visibility, contributions, and challenges. Featuring a keynote address by Vancouver-based artist Jin-me Yoon, as well as a full day of panel presentations and discussions, the conference welcomes scholars, students, and cultural workers engaged in Asian Canadian and Asian diasporic research creation, and cultural engagement.
The first day of the conference,听April 12, begins at 1:00pm at the Korean Cultural Centre with a round table of artist talks by Jinny Yu (Ottawa), Jacqueline Ho脿ng Nguy峄卬 (Stockholm/Montreal), and Sarindar Dhaliwal (Toronto). Following this discussion is a panel featuring curators and scholars who will speak to the challenges and ethics of curating Asian diasporic art. We will wrap up the first day with a plenary discussion that will help steer the conversation to linkages beyond the nation, negotiating the politics of transnational exchanges as they pertain to conceptions of 鈥楪lobal Asias.鈥�
The second day of the conference,听April 13, begins at 10:00am with a tour of the Canada Art Bank鈥檚 collection of works by culturally and racially diverse artists in Canada. The tour is followed by a workshop that will highlight networks and nodes in the study of Asian diasporic contemporary art. We will then reconvene at the National Gallery at 6:00pm for听听by Vancouver-based artist and professor Jin-me Yoon (Simon Fraser University), whose presentation, 鈥淧ostcards from听The听Long View:听Nationalism, Transnationalism and Relationalism鈥� will address her practice, with attention to her new body of photographic postcards,听The Long View.
This conference is organized as part of the听Canada 150: Asian Canadians in Visual Culture听project, which marks Canada鈥檚 150th听anniversary by signaling 2017 as a key moment to address the representation of Asian Canadians in visual culture. A partnership between Concordia University, 杏吧原创 University, New York University, and the University of British Columbia,听Canada 150: Asian Canadians in Visual Culture听is a SSHRC-funded collaborative research project initiated by Alice Ming Wai Jim (Concordia), Ming Tiampo (杏吧原创), Christopher Lee (UBC), and Alexandra Chang (NYU). The project brings together researchers, cultural practitioners and community organizers through a series of workshops, conference meetings, and public lectures in New York, Montreal, and Ottawa.
