Established in 1996, National Aboriginal Day is about recognizing and celebrating the unique and diverse heritage, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis peoples.<\/p>\n<p>In order to fully recognize and appreciate Indigenous peoples, CFICE Poverty Reduction researchers say it\u2019s vital to have true reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Treaty Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otc.ca\/pages\/get_informed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">describes reconciliation<\/a> as a process of recognizing the harm that has occurred in the past to build trust and work towards a healthier future.<\/p>\n<p>In Phase I of the project, CFICE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/sector-specific-work\/poverty-reduction\/\">Poverty Reduction<\/a> Hub supported research that looked at the effectiveness of community campus engagement at the <a href=\"http:\/\/station20west.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Station 20 West<\/a> Community Enterprise Centre in Saskatoon, Sask. Station 20 West works in collaboration with a large Indigenous community, among other groups of the Saskatoon population. The centre is designed to improve social and economic equity, increase food security and reduce income and health disparities in inner-city Saskatoon through a collaborative, community-based approach.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A path to true reconciliation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Colleen and Isobel's presentation slides at C2UExpo 2017.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18290165_10155313781718833_597083026_o.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>At the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.c2uexpo.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C2UExpo 2017<\/a>\u00a0conference, on May 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 2017, a full house of community members, academics, and policy professionals listened as CFICE affiliates Colleen Christopherson-Cote, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saskatoonpoverty2possibility.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saskatoon Poverty Reduction Partnership<\/a> coordinator, and Dr. Isobel Findlay, co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usask.ca\/cuisr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community-University Institute for Social Research<\/a> at the University of Saskatchewan, presented parts of this research.<\/p>\n<p>Their 15-minute presentation <em>On a Path of True Reconciliation: Investing in a Poverty-Free Saskatoon <\/em>highlighted how principles of truth and reconciliation can strengthen community-campus partnerships and facilitate effective approaches to poverty reduction.<\/p>\n<p>With only 15 minutes to discuss big issues and rigorous research, Christopherson-Cote and Findlay focussed on a few key messages to highlight the importance of reconciliation for the audience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6040\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 400px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6040 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Colleen Christopherson-Cote and Isobel Findlay present at C2UExpo 2017.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-240x180.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/18318559_10155313776033833_1853824970_o.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colleen Christopherson-Cote and Isobel Findlay present at C2UExpo 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to Findlay, this meant highlighting the point that, \u201cWithout reconciliation, there can be no end to poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnding poverty is about ending discrimination, ending the colonial legacy and ending systemic barriers that produce and reproduce poverty in particular communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Findlay explains that these barriers are a huge burden for indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0discussed the economic costs of not having reconciliation by including, \u201cfacts and figures of the costs to the justice system, to the education system, losses to the economy, and costs of use of social services\u201d caused by the ongoing colonial legacy and intergenerational violence and trauma, explains Findlay. This was done not to obscure the social, cultural and health consequences, but to highlight that sustainable futures depend on ending systemic barriers, and focussing efforts toward true reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>For Christopherson-Cote and Findlay, true reconciliation is about being authentic, committed and genuine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we potentially have more harm done if it\u2019s not genuine,\u201d says Christopherson-Cote.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Building reconciliation into poverty reduction efforts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To incorporate reconciliation into poverty reduction work, Christopherson-Cote and Findlay note that it\u2019s necessary to include and value indigenous voices, experiences and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Christopherson-Cote and her team at the Saskatoon Poverty Reduction Partnership have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/73x4vz1p3npvf9z\/Creating%20a%20culture%20of%20inclusion.pdf?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guide<\/a> for community groups and employers working to reduce poverty to include the voices of those with lived experiences of poverty. The document is not indigenous-specific and can be applied to all marginalized groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding people with lived experience of poverty is a critical piece,\u201d explains Christopherson-Cote. \u201cIf you leave them out then you\u2019re essentially making things for people without their input, and that isn\u2019t the best way to do business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christopherson-Cote also notes that reading the entirety of Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trc.ca\/websites\/trcinstitution\/File\/2015\/Findings\/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calls to Action<\/a> is an obligation for those working in poverty reduction in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6035\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Truth and Reconciliation Logo (Commission of Canada)\" width=\"390\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo.jpg 390w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo-160x55.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo-240x83.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/CO-TRC-logo-360x125.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a>Findlay and Christopherson-Cote both agree that reconciliation is key to strengthening community-campus partnerships, and that the ability to learn from the stories and first-hand experiences of community members is an invaluable benefit of community-campus-based research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Leah Piehler, CFICE Volunteer June 21st is National Aboriginal Day in Canada.
