TVs require the use of power when they are off so that they can receive the signal from the remote and many other appliances consume power for emitting little lights or clocks. \u00a0Although it doesn&#8217;t seem like much it does add up. \u00a0Standby power can account for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2011\/03\/15\/vampire-loads-powering-a-standby-world\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of residential power <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumption. That&#8217;s 10% of power that you&#8217;re not using but you\u2019re paying for.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5306\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 240px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5306\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer-240x302.png\" alt=\"\u00a9Canadian Tire\" width=\"240\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer-240x302.png 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer-160x201.png 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer-400x503.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer-360x453.png 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/timer.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Canadian Tire<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can reduce standby power in your home by unplugging appliances when you are not using them so that they cannot draw power. \u00a0You can make it even simpler by using <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenlivingideas.com\/2014\/11\/24\/use-timers-kitchen-maximum-energy-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for appliances so you don&#8217;t have to remember to walk around your home unplugging appliances every day. You can set the timer to turn off power during times when you know the appliances \u00a0won&#8217;t be in use.
