Hmmmm\u2026. Let&#8217;s think on it. *a light flicks on above our head* I got an idea: light bulbs!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulbs.com\/learning\/incandescent.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incandescent lights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a common form of electric lighting and early produced light bulb that has been in use for over 100 years. \u00a0Because I don&#8217;t want to give you a physics lesson please believe me when I say that incandescent bulbs are not very efficient. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5250\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 187px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5250\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-240x164.jpg\" alt=\"light bulbs\" width=\"187\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-240x164.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-160x110.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-768x526.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-400x274.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs-360x247.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/light-bulbs.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Pinterest<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018incandescent\u201d means to emit light as a result of something being heated. \u00a0According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/physics.info\/energy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">law of conservation of energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, energy can not be created or destroyed, but rather it is transformed into another form. \u00a0If we look at incandescent light bulbs, the energy that is being used is being transformed not only into light, but also heat. Therefore making it an ineffective as not all of the energy used produces light. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for a light bulb to more efficient, it would require giving off less heat as a byproduct. Halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lights (CFL), and light emitting diodes (LED) are energy efficient lights. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepco-solarlighting.com\/blog\/bid\/145611\/The-Advantages-of-LED-Lights-for-the-Environment\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95% of the energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used for LED lighting in converted into light and only 5% into heat. \u00a0LEDs also do not contain toxic chemicals, have better light distribution (meaning less lights requireds), and a longer life span. \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5249\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-240x240.jpg\" alt=\"light bulb\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-160x160.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights-360x360.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityfirst\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-Energy-Efficient-Lights.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy efficient lights can typically use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.gov\/energysaver\/how-energy-efficient-light-bulbs-compare-traditional-incandescents\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25-80% less energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than traditional incandescent light bulbs therefore saving you money on your energy bills. \u00a0They can also last 3-25 times longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s the idea: look at the light bulbs you have in your home and consider replacing them with more energy efficient light bulbs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Carly Foubert, CFICE Communications RA December 23, our 23rd sustainable tip, what&#8217;s our tip of the day?
