Since the beginning of the Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CFICE) project in 2012, Elizabeth (Bessa) Whitmore has held\u00a0a lead role on the team.<\/p>\n

Whitmore was the co-lead of the Knowledge Mobilization<\/a> Hub in the first phase of CFICE, and now is transitioning to the CCE Brokering<\/a> Working Group for Phase II.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth (Bessa) Whitmore, Academic Co-lead of the Knowledge Mobilization Hub and the Community Campus Engagement Brokering Working Group.<\/p><\/div>\n

Whitmore has extensive experience in international development from teaching and doing community research abroad. Whitmore brought that aspect into her lectures at 杏吧原创 University\u2019s School of Social Work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been an activist all my life,\u201d Whitmore says. \u201cAs a faculty member at 杏吧原创, I\u2019ve been very engaged with community. Much of what my teaching has been is interactive teaching and getting students out into the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitmore believes getting students out and working with the community is the best classroom experience they can get.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m not good at just standing in front of the class and blabbering on about something,\u201d Whitmore chuckles.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting students out into the community because they need that kind of real world exposure, I think, is highly motivating to them \u2013 to do something that\u2019s actually useful to somebody. Depending on their age, they really don\u2019t have a lot of experience out there in NGOs and community based organizations, and it\u2019s a great way for them to start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitmore says she joined CFICE because it perfectly aligned with her teaching style.<\/p>\n

\u201c[CFICE] is certainly right up my alley with the whole notion of campus-community engagement,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s something I’ve been interested in for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently, Whitmore is busy with the transition from Phase I to Phase II at CFICE in the CCE Brokering Working Group. There, she will act as a broker between the community and post-secondary institutions to solve community needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cA broker is a kind of funnel that helps people in both directions find what they need and what they can share,\u201d Whitmore describes.<\/p>\n

Together with Jason Garlough<\/a>, community co-lead of the CCE Brokering Working Group and Executive Director of the Ottawa Eco-Talent Network<\/a>, Whitmore is working on a pilot project in the Ottawa region. The project will work to develop a brokering mechanism that will match researchers from post-secondary institutions with a community that has a research need.<\/p>\n

When Whitmore isn’t busy with all of that, she\u2019s also involved in CFICE\u2019s Evaluation and Analysis<\/a> Working Group helping to evaluate the entire project.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to know how it\u2019s going, what\u2019s working and what isn’t working, what needs to change, and what success means. We need to think about all that stuff as we go along and not just at the end,\u201d Whitmore stresses.<\/p>\n

Each of the working groups is doing evaluation in a different way and Whitmore sees this as a strength because of the size and diversity of the CFICE project.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing part of the Program Committee<\/a>, which is all the co-leads, it\u2019s a great group of people. We\u2019re thinking together, learning together and coming up with ideas. It\u2019s been very stimulating for me,\u201d Whitmore says.<\/p>\n
