\"A<\/a>Writing blog posts and articles can be daunting \u2013 especially if\u00a0you’re used to writing academically!<\/p>\n

But CFICE does a lot of interesting and important work, and we want to share this information. To help with this effort, CFICE members\u00a0are encouraged to write and contribute content for CFICE\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

Here are 5 tips to guide you when writing for the web.<\/p>\n

1. Know your audience.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the most important thing to keep in mind while writing \u2013 who\u2019s reading?<\/p>\n

CFICE\u2019s website and newsletter reach a wide network of academics, students, and community partners.<\/p>\n

While the audience is varied in its fields of interest and levels of engagement, it has one thing in common \u2013 interest in community-campus partnerships.<\/p>\n

2. Grab them early.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the Internet. There\u2019s a ton of content out there \u2013 and we\u2019re all eager to move on to the next bit of information.<\/p>\n

Try to come up with a punchy title that grabs a reader\u2019s attention. Be sure to follow with a strong leading statement.<\/p>\n

As much as possible, try to cover the 5Ws<\/a> of your topic in your first sentence or two.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>3. Keep it Short<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the age of video clips and listicles<\/a> very few people will spend more than a few minutes reading an article.<\/p>\n

Writing small paragraphs with short sentences will appear less dense to the reader, and will keep them reading.<\/p>\n

Make it a true challenge and try to stay between 250-500 words \u2013 I promise, it can be done. (This is only 449 words.)<\/p>\n

4. Keep it simple<\/strong><\/p>\n

As previously mentioned, CFICE\u2019s audience is varied.<\/p>\n

To ensure everyone can understand you, avoid using too much jargon. It is important to be accurate when representing research, but it can be done using plain language<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How would you explain your research to a friend or parent? This is how you should be writing about your research.<\/p>\n

5. Let go of academic rigor<\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll never be able to capture all of the nuances of your research in a short, accessible article. It\u2019s okay – this is not the point of blog posts.<\/p>\n

The objective of these articles is to give a snapshot of the projects and research done by CFICE\u2019s partners \u2013 to share our findings with the public.<\/p>\n

Once the reader is interested in the topic, they will desire more information. Take advantage of this by including links to your paper or further resources.<\/p>\n

\"Profile<\/a>With these 5 tips, you\u2019ll be well on your way to sharing your work with colleagues and interested members of the public.<\/p>\n

Remember, blog posts and articles are whole other beasts compared to journal articles and grant applications \u2013 but they\u2019re just as important to sharing the knowledge gained through CFICE\u2019s research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
