As part of our support for the Global Climate Strike taking place in Ottawa on Friday, September 27th 杏吧原创 Climate Commons circulated a statement of support for the youth climate movement and strike. Below is a copy of the letter.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR YOUTH CLIMATE MOVEMENT AND ITS STRIKE<\/span><\/p>\n

The youth climate movement is calling for a global general strike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We, the undersigned faculty and students at 杏吧原创 University, support this movement and pledge to support its strike on Canada\u2019s main day of action (27th September).<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by strikes initiated by Greta Thunberg, the youth climate movement demands more ambitious climate action than has been pursued by Canadian and provincial governments. As scholars, we endorse the youth movement\u2019s concerns as well-founded and informed by multiple lines of incontrovertible evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our politicians have a responsibility to speak truthfully and to act urgently, ensuring a fair and just transition to a future that is not threatened by dangerous climate change; scientists, scholars, and citizens have a responsibility to support the youth movement, to defend their right to strike, and to denounce actions that threaten or demean its participants.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rapid mobilizations of Fridays For Future and the youth climate movement illustrate that its participants understand the urgency of our situation. As scientists, scholars, and students, we unequivocally support their demand for urgent and effective action.<\/span><\/p>\n

The youth movement is calling on us to respond to climate change, to address the mass extinction of life on this planet, and to create a future for present and future generations. They deserve our respect and unreserved support. We are proud to join them September 27<\/span>th<\/span>, and encourage people of all ages, professions and walks of life to join us on Parliament Hill at noon in a public demonstration of our support. At the same time, our support and our response to climate change cannot stop there. We also wish to indicate our ongoing commitment to advocating for climate change action.<\/span><\/p>\n
