Friday Forum: Disaster and Climate Risk and Resilience Assessments (Oct 10) /climatecommons/2025/friday-forum-disaster-and-climate-risk-and-resilience-assessments-oct-10/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=friday-forum-disaster-and-climate-risk-and-resilience-assessments-oct-10 Sun, 05 Oct 2025 14:52:50 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4673 Disaster and Climate Risk and Resilience Assessments

Friday Forum 1:00PM-2:30 EDT Friday October 10, 2025

The British Columbia Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions led a provincial disaster and climate risk and resilience assessment (DCRRA), and are continuing to advance disaster and climate risk assessment practice in the province. This work will inform risk reduction and resilience planning and support regulated entities under BC’s Emergency and Disaster Management Act. The DCRRA team collaborated with a First Nations Committee and engaged over 200 subject matter experts to conduct the assessment.

The assessment looks at six key hazards: extreme heat, drought, wildfires, coastal flooding, riverine flood and earthquakes, and considered the possibility of multi-hazard events. It examined the consequences of these hazards across six value areas: built environment, natural environment, health and wellbeing, economy, governance, and society, culture and relationality. Findings and data will be made available on ClimateReadyBC, an online tool to help people understand and reduce disaster risks.

  • ĚýĚý

To address climate change and climate justice, it is essential that policies and solutions target the persistent drivers and underlying causes of the crisis.

Through the , Indigenous Climate Action has investigated the problems of climate change, how it is exacerbating existing challenges in our communities and how colonial capitalism is not only driving the crises but erecting barriers to our own solutions.

In 2023 Indigenous Climate Action released Part 1 of the Phase 2 report exploring the role policy plays in upholding colonial capitalism. Now Indigenous Climate Action are gearing up to release Part 2, reclaiming policy as our own and exploring how it can serve our own transformative, decolonial goals.

Join Indigenous Climate Action for the official report launch and powerful discussion where we will nurture a deeper understanding of how “Land Back” can fundamentally reshape climate policy.

All of Us Together: 350 Canada Campaign /climatecommons/2024/all-of-us-together-campaign/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=all-of-us-together-campaign Mon, 02 Dec 2024 19:14:52 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4188 All of Us from 350 Canada

“We all deserve a fighting chance at a decent life. It shouldn’t feel impossible to put a roof over your head and food on the table. But every day, the hope of a decent life feels further and further out of reach for far too many of us.

The biggest companies in the world are making record profits while we pay the price. From our sky-rocketing grocery bills to our smoke-filled summers, we’re the ones stuck bearing the costs of an economy rigged to benefit an elite few. And while our politicians talk a big game, many of them want to give corporations more power— not less.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. History shows us that when working people come together, we can tip the scales back in our favour.

By raising taxes on Big Oil and Canada’s wealthiest corporations, we can recoup billions of dollars to transform our energy system, create good unionized jobs for workers, build free public transit, construct energy-efficient social housing, honour Indigenous land rights, and invest in the robust public services our communities depend on. It’s time to tax their billions and build a future for All of Us.”

Tell the federal party leaders: tax their billions.

Canada’s political parties are gearing up for the next election—let’s demand bold action for a fairer future.

While billionaires and Big Oil rake in record profits, everyday people are left behind.By taxing Big Oil and the wealthiest corporations, we can generate billions to:

  • Build free public transit
  • Create good union jobs
  • Honour Indigenous land rights
  • Strengthen vital public services

It’s time to prioritize people over profits.

Event: Fighting Far-Right Populism at Home and Abroad (Nov 26) /climatecommons/2024/event-fighting-far-right-populism-at-home-and-abroad-nov-26/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=event-fighting-far-right-populism-at-home-and-abroad-nov-26 Tue, 19 Nov 2024 21:47:04 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4158 This online event will be on Tuesday, November 26 at 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET / 8pm AT / 8:30pm NT.

Far-right populism and climate denial are on the rise globally. Anti-science politicians are preying on the economic anxieties of working people but, once elected, they cut climate policies, gut public services, scapegoat marginalized communities, and turn the keys of power over to the corporate elite.

Join 350 Canada to hear from organizers in the US, the UK, and Canada about the lessons they have learned fighting far right populism in recent elections.

Guest Speakers:

  • Jeff Ordower: North American Director at 350.org
  • Janelle Lapointe: Senior Advisor at the David Suzuki Foundation
  • Tommy Vickerstaff: UK Team Lead at 350.org
  • Members of the 350 Canada team

In the midst of unprecedented heat waves caused by climate change, many Canadians are suffering. Re.Climate know that heat waves are killers. Vulnerable populations, renters and seniors are most at risk. In June 2024, when extreme heat swept over Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) was able to show that climate change made these heat waves .

All signs point to more heat waves this summer and in summers to come.ĚýThis tipĚýsheet is based on peer-reviewed literature, Re.Climate’s focus groups, and research byĚýĚý, andĚý. ItĚýgives you quick, clear guidance on language and imagery to use in your communications.
