Rally Against Nuclear Waste in Kichi Sibi (Nov 11) /climatecommons/2025/rally-against-nuclear-waste-in-kichi-sibi-nov-11/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rally-against-nuclear-waste-in-kichi-sibi-nov-11 Mon, 10 Nov 2025 14:14:07 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4767 Hosted by Ěý˛ą˛Ô»ĺĚý

  • Wednesday November 12, 2025 @12PM
  • 90 Sparks St, Ottawa, ON K1P, Canada

They’re back in court on November 12 to defend the Kichi Sibi and our watershed from a nuclear waste megadump! Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, Kebaowek First Nation, Sierra Club Canada and the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility took Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to court and WON . . . but CNL has appealed.

JOIN US as CNL’s appeal is heard, and citizen groups and First Nations again argue before a judge why the law must be respected.

A judge said that Environment Canada should not have issued a “Species at Risk Permit” for the radioactive waste dump to be built on CNL’s chosen site near the Ottawa River, where it will destroy habitat for protected and endangered species. CNL is a creation of and funded by the federal government – so it’s the feds fighting citizens in Federal Court.
Join us from Noon to 2 PM in front of 90 Sparks St. Do it for the endangered bats, songbirds, turtles, Eastern wolves and bears living on the site of the future radioactive megadump!

Join us!  Please share the event and give your RSVP on the Facebook event:Ěý

Ottawa Climate Equity Workshop (Aug 27) /climatecommons/2025/ottawa-climate-equity-workshop-aug-27/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ottawa-climate-equity-workshop-aug-27 Mon, 18 Aug 2025 14:15:30 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4623 Hosted by Ecology Ottawa and CAWI

Ottawa is undergoing significant development, with a commitment of 151,000 new housing units by 2031. In Ottawa, 45% of our emissions come from buildings. Ottawans are experiencing climate change now, and equity-deserving communities are disproportionately impacted. These same communities have historically been absent or underrepresented from the urban planning and development process. We have a significant opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while addressing affordability of new builds—while also empowering equity-deserving communities to contribute to the development process. Our Climate Equity project aims to seize this opportunity for impact, directly addressing the long standing imbalance of participation in the urban planning and development process, and the need to empower all communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Join us Wednesday, August 27th at 6:00 pm for a workshop on climate equity.

Indigenous Acts of Resistance – A Vital Conversation with Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel (Mar 11) /climatecommons/2025/indigenous-acts-of-resistance-a-vital-conversation-with-katsitsakwas-ellen-gabriel-mar-11/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=indigenous-acts-of-resistance-a-vital-conversation-with-katsitsakwas-ellen-gabriel-mar-11 Mon, 03 Mar 2025 18:46:31 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4369 University of Ottawa presents: Shirley Greenberg Annual Lecture: Indigenous Acts of Resistance – A Vital Conversation with Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel

Mar 11, 2025 — 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The history of Indigenous resistance is one of memory, justice, and the ongoing struggle for the recognition of rights. How do Indigenous peoples continue to fight for the preservation of their lands, cultures, and identities in a world still shaped by the lasting impacts of colonialism?

These crucial questions will take center stage at the Shirley Greenberg Annual Lecture 2025, featuring Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel, a prominent Indigenous rights advocate, in conversation with Professor Audra Simpson, a distinguished Mohawk anthropologist.

Held annually, the Shirley Greenberg Annual Lecture amplifies the voices of committed activists and influential thinkers tackling issues of social justice and human rights.

In 2025, this event will be an essential reflection on Indigenous resistance, featuring two major figures in the fight for Indigenous self-determination. Through an insightful and inspiring dialogue, Ellen GabrielĚý˛ą˛Ô»ĺĚýAudra Simpson will offer a critical perspective on past and present struggles, as well as the challenges ahead.

Opening Art Exhibition – Finding New Ways to Connect with the Land (Feb 22– Apr 18) /climatecommons/2025/opening-art-exhibition-finding-new-ways-to-connect-with-the-land-feb-22-apr-18/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=opening-art-exhibition-finding-new-ways-to-connect-with-the-land-feb-22-apr-18 Mon, 24 Feb 2025 19:11:56 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4353

“Join for an exhibition of photographs designed to inspire new ways of connecting with the land. Starting last weekend at the Shenkman, with a formal opening on March 5th, CORRESPONDENCES showcases the work of ten artists from across Canada as they explore how our relationship with our home can be seen with fresh eyes.

CORRESPONDENCES takes viewers on a journey from the expansive landscape of Alaska’s pipelines to the overlooked insects that thrive in the shadow of Ottawa’s tallest building and to the collateral damage of roadkill. Get up close and personal with Sadie, a lovable dog who teaches her owner how to see. Explore the commons within a Hydro corridor and the surprising ways its neighbours use it. Imagine a world of wonder seen through a child’s eyes in Saskatchewan and delight in the way a woman moulds her body into the landscape of trees and rocks in rural Quebec. Contemplate the way water marks a city landscape after a flood and the pure beauty of light as it falls along a forest path. Reflect on the way trees and rocks wrap around each other along the Niagara River.

  • “The problem in our relations with the natural world, then, is that we have forgotten how to correspond with the beings and things of which it is comprised…If interaction is about othering, then correspondence is about togethering. It is about the ways along which lives, in their perpetual unfolding or becoming, answer to one another.”  (Tim Ingold, Correspondences)“
  • In an age when people are feeling increasingly disconnected from each other and the natural world, CORRESPONDENCES inspires us to find new ways to connect,” says photographer Jon Stuart.”

Participating artists:ĚýSasha Chapman Valerie Chartrand, Jim Lamont, Victoria Laube, Leah Mowers, Kim Manley Ort, Richard Robesco, Vera Saltzman, Ruth Steinberg and Jon Stuart.

Public Reception: Wednesday, March 5th, 6 – 8 pm

Duration: February 22nd – April 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

Location: LaLande + Doyle exhibition space, Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Ottawa
