Petition: Save The People’s Park Ottawa /climatecommons/2024/petition-save-the-peoples-park/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=petition-save-the-peoples-park Tue, 15 Oct 2024 13:32:52 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=4065

The is a proposed four-lane freeway running northwest from Walkley Avenue near Conroy Road in Alta Vista to the Nicholas on-ramp in Old Ottawa East. The AVTC would run through the well-used green space beside Springhurst Park between the Rideau River and Lees Avenue, sometimes referred to asthe People’s Park.

The AVTC was first proposed more than half a century ago. Since then, the city has declared a climate emergency, built light rail crossing the river in Old Ottawa East, and recognized the importance of park space for healthy and vibrant communities. In the coming year, city staff will be working to update Ottawa’s Transportation Master Plan (last updated in 2013). As part of this update, we want to see the People’s Park saved permanently, and ensure the proposed AVTC is not built through loved greenspace in Old Ottawa East.

Sign Letter to Trudeau to End Fossil & Petrochemical Financing /climatecommons/2024/sign-letter-to-trudeau-to-end-fossil-petrochemical-financing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sign-letter-to-trudeau-to-end-fossil-petrochemical-financing Mon, 02 Sep 2024 13:58:41 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=3961 Later this fall, the government will be releasing new rules to fulfil their commitmentto end public financing for fossil fuelsfrom crown corporations. Those of you who have been following this file might recall that in Dec 2022, the government passed fairly strong rules which ended international public financing, and then last year less robust rules aimed at ending inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. (The government’s distinction between those is that subsidies are the money spent by departments or tax measures, while public financing are the loans, loan guarantees and insurance mostly provided by crown corporations like Export Development Canada). However, the lion’s share of the financial support going to the industry is public financing for domestic oil and gas companies and projects — which the government has committedto eliminating.
Unfortunately, Finance Canada (and to a lesser extent, Natural Resources Canada) is doing everything they can to weaken the rules. We need to draw some red lines. A weak domestic financing policy is worse than no policy at all — it legitimises ongoing public financing and sets a dangerous global precedent, especially with Canada assuming the G7 presidency in 2025.
I’ll be collecting signatories untilSeptember 11th.We’ll also be collecting academic signatures. Please share with your networks so that we can have a really strong number of signatories.

Ecology Ottawa’s Bird-Friendly Ottawa Petition /climatecommons/2024/ecology-ottawas-bird-friendly-ottawa-petition/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ecology-ottawas-bird-friendly-ottawa-petition Mon, 29 Jul 2024 14:30:36 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=3930 Ecology Ottawa has created urging the City to better protect birds in Ottawa. The petition calls on City Council to protect bird habitat, implement bird-friendly standards, educate residents, and obtain Bird-Friendly City status.

Birds play a critical role in Ottawa’s ecosystem and life. Approximately 2 million individual birds nest in our urban area, comprising over 180 bird species, and millions more migrate through annually.

While the City of Ottawa has made several commitments to protecting birds, birds face a variety of threats in Ottawa, including habitat loss, free-roaming cats, untreated glass, excessive exterior lighting, and pesticide application. In fact, approximately 250,000 birds are killed in Ottawa annually in window collisions alone.

Please sign Ecology Ottawa’s petition calling on City Council to protect bird habitat, implement bird-friendly standards, educate residents, and obtain Bird-Friendly City certification.

Petition: End Fossil Fuel Promotion in City Facilities (March 5) /climatecommons/2024/petition-end-fossil-fuel-promotion-in-city-facilities-march-5/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=petition-end-fossil-fuel-promotion-in-city-facilities-march-5 Mon, 04 Mar 2024 15:04:44 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=3697 A group of fifteen organizations, including Ecology Ottawa, is calling on Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Ottawa City Council to ban fossil fuel promotion in City facilities.

City’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee meetsto discuss the City’s, and Ecology Ottawa will be there giving a delegation supporting a ban on fossil fuel promotion. Currently, fossil-fuel companies are allowed to advertise in City facilities like arenas, parks, and City publications.

As Ecology Ottawa’s program coordinator William van Geest , the promotion of fossil fuels is “in direct conflict [with] the city’s commitments on climate and public health and equity.”

Permitting fossil-fuel promotion in City facilities contradicts the City’s commitments and its responsibilities for the well-being of Ottawans. The City already bans tobacco advertising because of its adverse health effects. Ecology Ottawa believes they should do the same with fossil-fuel promotion.

Find the letter and list of signatories. Please contactto express your support for a ban!

Take Action: Canada: Stop Big Oil From Polluting Our Climate /climatecommons/2024/take-action-canada-stop-big-oil-from-polluting-our-climate/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=take-action-canada-stop-big-oil-from-polluting-our-climate Mon, 05 Feb 2024 16:25:22 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=3623 Join Environmental Defence Canada in their petition:

“For decades, oil and gas companies have profited from harmful activities that fuel the climate crisis. These fossil fuels are the primary cause of climate disasters, like wildfires and floods, that are costing people their lives and homes across Canada and around the world.

This is a critical time for Canada’s climate future. If the federal government continues to bend to the pressure of the oil and gas companies, Canada will remain one of the worst contributors to the global climate crisis. The Canadian government must stand up to the oil and gas industry, and support Canadians’ vision to cap and cut that industry’s emissions and end all fossil fuel subsidies, without exception.

Two years ago, the Government of Canada promised to cap and cut greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas industry – the largest source of emissions in the country. Right now the government is dragging its feet on releasing the new rules, and there’s a real risk that the rules won’t be strong enough. The reason? Constant lobbying from oil and gas executives.

Canada cannot meet its climate commitments without cutting oil and gas pollution. We cannot afford more delays or weak rules that let oil and gas companies off the hook.

Take action today and tell the federal government to put people in Canada ahead of the profits of oil and gas companies.

Your letter will be sent to: Your local MP,Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Hon. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.”
