The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its sixth assessment report earlier this year. The report focuses on mitigation and details what must be done to avoid the worst outcomes of climate change. This week’s Noons for Now discussion will address the implications of this IPCC report while also providing a space for thinking about the process of crafting these documents – how they’re made, disseminated, and utilized.

Speakers:

holds a Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Governance and Innovation, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo. She is a Lead Author on the Sixth Assessment Report of the IPCC.

James Meadowcroft is a Professor in both the Department of Political Science and the School of Public Policy and Administration at ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Univeristy. He recently completed a 14-year term as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Governance for Sustainable Development.

New Reading Group Announcement: Climate Science for Non-Experts /climatecommons/2021/new-reading-group-announcement-climate-science-for-non-experts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-reading-group-announcement-climate-science-for-non-experts Mon, 12 Apr 2021 14:41:33 +0000 /climatecommons/?p=1616

One of ourÌýgroup members, Vladimir Diaz Cuellar, is interested in starting a climate science reading group. The first meeting will be held at 6PM EST on April 16th to determine readings for the group. Please contact Vlad if you’re interested in participating in the reading group or if you’d like more information. His email address is:Ìývladimir.diaz.cuellar@gmail.com.

Here’s his description of the group:ÌýThe purpose of the reading group will be to familiarize and keep up to date with the natural science literature that assesses the state of climate change and the discussions about the implications for the Earth system and society, particularly the works that are written for the broader public. This will give us an opportunity to learn collectively about climate science, potentially listen to experts more familiar with the literature (by inviting experts from the university to some of the meetings), and make connections with our work in social sciences, humanities, or activism.

The group will aim to have 2 or 3 meetings during a year, including one to discuss the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’sÌýAR6 Climate Change 2021: The PhysicalÌýScienceÌýBasis, the main component of the IPCC’s assessment report, that is scheduled to be published this year.

The book list will be chosen collectively. Some potential titles include:

  • Michael E. Mann (2021)ÌýThe New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet
  • Hansen,ÌýJames (2022)ÌýSophie’s Planet: A Search for truth about our remarkable home planet and its future.
  • Simon L Lewis and Mark A Maslin (2018)ÌýThe Human Planet: How We Created the AnthropoceneÌý
  • Vaclav Smil (2017)ÌýEnergy and Civilization: A History
  • Hansen, James E. (2009).ÌýStorms of My Grandchildren: The Truth ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity.
  • Spencer R. Weart (2003, 2008)ÌýThe Discovery of Global Warming: Revised and Expanded Edition
  • Stephen H. Schneider (1997),ÌýLaboratory Earth: the Planetary Gamble We Can’t Afford to Lose

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)has released five assessments since 1989.Ìý In each cycle, IPCC synthesizes research over the previous 5 to 7 year period and presents its findings in three volumes: Climate Science; Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability; and Mitigation of Climate Change.Ìý IPCC’s fifth assessment report (AR5) was released in 2013-14. Several media releases reported that while AR5 employed even stronger language linking recent climate changes to human activities, there was also a sense that “global warming was old news.â€

This presentation reviews the IPCC process and highlights five significant new findings from AR5, including climate change is accelerating, North America is not immune to climate change impacts, a new chapter on human security and climate change, adaptation cannot overcome all climate change impacts, and preventing dangerous climate change will require leaving the majority of fossil fuels in the ground.

The presentation will conclude with a discussion of future directions, including possible implications for the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in December 2015.
