Ӱԭ partners with OCDSB for School Within A University project

April 10, 2026

December 5, 2023

The Ottawa Ӱԭ District School Board (OCDSB) and Ӱԭ’s Centre for Initiatives in Education have a new opportunity for high school students to access and experience university.

The new School Within A University is a pilot project for high school students who may not have considered university studies as a pathway. It is only the second of its kind in Ontario, and it is the first to target a specific group of students.

Students in grades 11 and 12 will take a university class for both high school and university credit. This creates a meaningful experience that encourages high school completion and lowers the threshold for postsecondary access. At the same time, the students and their high school teacher will have a dedicated space on campus as a home base for their exploration of campus life – from studying in the Library, to working out in Athletics, to grabbing a snack through Dining Services. And, of course, visiting Therapy Dogs.

“We’re excited to welcome these students to campus and hope to inspire and support them as they consider their post-secondary opportunities. Ӱԭ University’s Centre for Initiatives in Education (CIE), which will host the program, was founded to expand access to education, particularly for underrepresented groups,” said Dr. Anne Bowker, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Ӱԭ University.

Many barriers currently prevent youth from pursuing post-secondary education. The new initiative extends CIE’s core mission of providing access to education, complementing established programming such as the Enriched Support Program (ESP), and reaching out to individuals earlier in their learning journey.

“The CIE is committed to creating a learning environment where every student, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive. We see this partnership with the OCDSB as an example of our shared commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive future through education,” said Dr. Bowker.

Meagan Malboeuf works in Program and Learning Innovation at the OCDSB. She has been a key collaborator with the CIE on this initiative. She is eagerly anticipating January 2024, when the high school students come to campus.

“I am looking forward to seeing a group of students change their lives through School Within a University, by regaining hope in their education and thriving from an authentic path to their Ontario secondary school diploma and to post- secondary education. The OCDSB has been a proud supporter of Ӱԭ’s ESP program for many years, and we are honoured to foster our relationship with Ӱԭ through this phenomenal learning experience for some of our most vulnerable but capable students.”

Summer Course: How to Be a University Student

April 10, 2026

How to be a University Student — August 22-26, 2022

Skills and habits for success!

How to be a University Student is a five-day, on-campus course for incoming university students who want a strong start in their university studies. A blend of lectures, readings, and workshops will teach students evidence-based strategies for success in university, with an emphasis on how to develop strong academic skills and habits. Students will apply their new knowledge through in-person, interactive workshops led by skilled upper-year university students.

This is more than just a week-long course: we provide structure and accountability to help students throughout their first year of university. Following completion of the summer portion of the course, students will have materials and a plan to make the most of the upcoming year. Students will also have the option to meet up with our team throughout the year to discuss their academic progress and learn more about additional campus resources if needed.

Topics Include:

  • Study skills and habits assessment
  • The transition to in-person learning
  • Forming and maintaining habits
  • Managing stress
  • Predicting interests, challenges, and strengths
  • Advanced goal setting: What’s a WOOP?
  • How learning works: Learning styles and other learning myths
  • Reading & writing for university: No more 5-paragraph essays
  • Academic self-concept, metacognition, growth mindset
  • Collaboration skills for higher education

This non-credit course is coordinated by Ӱԭ University’s Centre for Initiatives in Education, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Public Affairs.

Dates and Fees

This course is in-person from August 22nd to August 26th. Registration will open with time tickets in July and students can enroll through , as they would a credit course.

The fee is $250 including HST.

Is this course for you?

After years of online studies, the transition to in-person learning can be exciting — but also a little daunting. This course gives students a head start to university. Students will develop study skills and establish habits for success, while meeting new people and becoming familiar with Ӱԭ’s campus.

Course Designer and Coordinator

Dr. Rachelle Thibodeau specializes in university student retention and success, peer-supported learning, and the psychology of teaching and learning. She is a coordinator of Academic Support, Program Evaluation, and Research for the Centre for Initiatives in Education, and a founding member of both the Centre for Initiatives in Education and the Enriched Support Program.

Assistant Coordinator

Sam Kwok is a graduate of Ӱԭ University’s Bachelor of Arts program with a major in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She has 6 years of experience as a Facilitator, Team Leader, and Academic Coach in the Enriched Support Program, and is pursuing a Master’s in Education. Outside of her academic life, Sam organizes and runs Dungeons & Dragons sessions and practices Japanese jiu jitsu.
