The programme aims to critically evaluate what lessons China&#8217;s own economic development transformation can offer other developing countries &#8211; in particular in low-income Africa.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>The research should take as a starting point the key developmental challenges facing Africa, and then assess whether experience from China\u2019s own development offers insights about how to meet those challenges.<\/p>\n<p>DFID and ESRC realise that in many cases China\u2019s own development experience is already well-researched and can only be of limited relevance to Africa because of differing socio-economic and political contexts and factors unrelated to policy. Nevertheless, the call is open to original and highly relevant research proposals in this area as long as they involve analysis and\/or primary fieldwork in Africa, possibly complemented with comparative analysis in China. This programme will <b>not <\/b>fund proposals which simply describe aspects of China\u2019s own developmental experience without critically evaluating its relevance within the African context.<\/p>\n<p>We also welcome research that will deepen our understanding of how Chinese engagement in Africa has impacted the continent\u2019s trajectory towards economic development and dispel misconceptions about China\u2019s role in Africa, and provide robust evidence-based analysis on implementable and sustainable solutions for promoting Africa\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>The programme encourages academics from developing and developed countries to work together in any configuration of their choosing, and principal investigators can be from anywhere in the world. Ideal team composition will include expertise from Africa and China. Important reminder: Any\u00a0UK and non-UK applicant(s) and their institutions intending to apply to this call must ensure they are registered with the Joint Electronic Submission System (Je-S). It is essential to allow sufficient time to secure Je-S registration &#8211; the sponsors strongly recommend that applicants register with Je-S at least four weeks prior to the call deadline, as no exceptions can be made for late submission of applications.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Funding Available<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Funds available: \u00a3200,000 to \u00a32 million<\/li>\n<li>Duration: 1-4
